The Indian Premier League (IPL) has become a huge source of revenue for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The league has contributed heavily in the earnings of Indian cricket. According to a recent report, the IPL brought in nearly 60% of the board’s total revenue in the financial year 2023-24.

How Much Did the BCCI Earn in 2023–24? See IPL’s Massive Role in It

The IPL is the world’s most popular T20 league by far. It commenced in 2007 and since then, it has grown every year. Top players from India and other cricket playing nations take part in the tournament, making it bigger than before. Every season of IPL attracts millions of fans and brings in huge profits, which is the reason for its grand success.
BCCI Revenue 2024
According to a report in The Hindu Business Line, quoting Rediffusion, the BCCI revenue 2024 comprised of ₹9,741.7 crore during FY 2023-24. Out of this, the IPL alone contributed ₹5,761 crore. This means the IPL made up 59% of the total money earned by the board. The IPL is not only a successful cricket league but also a business powerhouse. Media rights, ticket sales, and sponsorships are all growing every year.
Business strategist and independent director Lloyd Mathias called the IPL a “golden goose” for Indian cricket. “BCCI in 2007 discovered a golden goose - the IPL which is now a 100 per cent part of the BCCI. The tournament is the best and media rights are constantly going up. IPL also ensures that players from Ranji Trophy-level get a playing field. IPL will continue to churn out profitability as it grows further,” Mathias said.
Other BCCI Sources of Revenue
Apart from the Indian Premier League, there are other BCCI sources of revenue as well. The board also earned money from other cricket events. As per the same report, the board made ₹361 crore from selling non-IPL media rights. This includes the broadcasting of international matches. However, experts say BCCI still has a lot of room to grow in this area. There is big scope to make more money from domestic cricket. Sandeep Goyal, Chief of Rediffusion, believes traditional Indian cricket competitions can also be a big revenue source.
He said, “BCCI has immense potential to commercialise traditional formats like Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, or CK Nayudu Trophy to shore up non-IPL revenues.” He also mentioned that the BCCI has close to ₹30,000 crore in reserves. These savings bring in around ₹1,000 crore in interest income every year.
Goyal added, “the board has close to ₹30,000 crore in reserves, which brings in about ₹1,000 crore a year in interest alone. These revenues aren’t just sustainable - they are poised to grow 10-12 per cent annually, thanks to expanding sponsorships, media deals, and matchday earnings.”
The report also pointed out that the International Cricket Council (ICC), which runs world cricket, depends heavily on the BCCI. The ICC is struggling to grow its own revenue and relies on India’s cricket body for financial strength. India’s strong cricket market, including millions of fans and a large media network, makes BCCI a major player in world cricket. With the success of IPL, BCCI’s influence has grown.
