History of the NBA

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional basketball league in the United States, created on August 3, 1949, after the merger of the rival leagues Basketball Association of America (BAA) and National Basketball League (NBL). The NBA, however, considers its founding on June 6, 1946, as it later adopted the BAA’s history and legacy. In its heyday, the NBA suffered financial hardships, limited TV ratings, and lack of exposure, compared to other sporting leagues in America. However, by the 1950s, the league started becoming popular among families enjoying basketball broadcasts. Players such as George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, and Bill Russell became household names, all while dominating the league through the ‘50s and ‘60s decade.

The 1980s decade is considered particularly revolutionary, largely driven by the heated but fan-loved rivalry between Magic Johnson's Los Angeles Lakers and Larry Bird's Boston Celtics. This period brought media attention like never before, helping increase the league’s reach on a global scale.

In 1984, the Chicago Bulls drafted a young Michael Jordan from the University of North Carolina with the 3rd overall pick. Little did they know that Jordan would go on to take the league’s popularity to heights beyond imaginable. Michael Jordan became the first global superstar from the NBA, thus setting precedence for the league to go international and basketball to emerge as a global sport.

The 1990s further established the NBA's global influence, with Jordan's Chicago Bulls achieving unprecedented success with their three-peat title campaigns. The ‘90s were also a period where some of the new generational talents were drafted into the league. Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kevin Garnett, and Dirk Nowitzki among others were from historic draft classes of the ‘90s decade, who later went on to dominate the league for the longest time in the new millennium.

Every decade in the league ushered in a new era of changes and evolution. The 2000s decade was all about the game evolving fundamentally, with a lot many players focusing on volume shooting and drilling buckets from the deep. At the same time, a new generation of legends such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry, James Harden, and Kevin Durant among others was drafted as well. These players went on to change the game and took the league to an international level.

In the later half of the 2010s decade, we also saw the rise of international superstars, with the last five MVPs of the league all being players of foreign origins and nationalities. Today, the NBA is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world, known for its state-of-the-art gameplay, athleticism, and diversified roster of global superstars. The league continues to get better, while also evolving as a global leader in professional sports.
