The English football Clubs, which are in turmoil and not being a dominant force in the first tier of English football, are famously known for their history, which they proudly boast. Burnley F.C. are one of them. Burnley Football Club was established in 1882, and they have successfully survived in English football for 143 years. In the 2025-26 season, Burnley F.C. will compete in the Premier League, as they secured promotion after being relegated in the 2024-25 season, under their former head coach, Vincent Kompany.
However, Kompany was the reason for Burnley Football Club's promotion to the first division of English football. Burnley Football Club are one of only five sides to have won all four professional divisions of English football, and have twice been crowned champions of England, in 1920–21 and 1959–60. Although Burnley history is rich but they are not among the most decorated clubs in English football.
A group of rugby players founded Burnley F.C., which is why Burnley history is well-documented and rich. Burnley Football Club won its first piece of silverware in Burnley history in 1883. By the end of the year, Burnley F.C. had become a professional club and signed multiple professional footballers. Burnley F.C. were relegated to the Second Division for the first time in 1896–97. And the next season, Burnley Football Club earned promotion again, as they won the league.
After spending nine years in the first division of English football, Burnley Football Club was relegated again. Pre-World War and in the World War seasons were turmoil for Burnley F.C., as they were constantly struggling to secure promotion. In 1946-47, post-World War seasons brought back new hope for Burnley F.C., as they finally secured promotion. Burnley F.C. secured a spot in the FA Cup final for the first time that season, and they faced Charlton Athletic in the final, where they were defeated in extra time.
In the 1979-80 season, Burnley F.C. were relegated to the third division for the first time in Burnley history. In 1988, Burnley F.C. played against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final of the Associate Cup, but they lost the match 2-0 in front of a record 80,000 people's attendance. In the 2009 season, Burnley F.C. earned their promotion in the Premier League, as they won the Championship final against Sheffield Wednesday, and secured a spot for the 2010 Premier League season.
Burnley Football Club became one of the smallest to host a Premier League game. Burnley F.C. started the season well and won back-to-back matches; however, they somehow survived that season, but next season, they were again relegated to the second tier. In the 2012 season, Sean Dyche became the manager of Burnley F.C., and in the 2013-14 season, they earned promotion again, as Burnley F.C. won the Championship title, with the help of Sean Dyche's tactical brilliance.
In December 2020, American Investment Company, ALK, bought an 84% stake in Burnley F.C. and became the majority owner. In the 2021-22 season, Burnley F.C. were relegated again. After spending a few years in the Championship, in the 2022-23 season, they were again promoted with the help of Vincent Kompany's tactical brilliance.
