Paul Scholes comments on Kobbie Mainoo comparisons

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has made a bold statement that Kobbie Mainoo is 10 times better than what he was at 19. In light of the recent comparisons between the two, Scholes urged fans not to “waste their time” in doing so.

Mainoo was on target against Manchester City in the FA Cup finals on Saturday as United won 2-1. The 19-year-old rounded off a clinical team move with an equally clinical finish beyond Stefan Ortega to double their advantage in the 39th minute, with Alejandro Garnacho scoring nine minutes before him.

City pulled one back late on through Jeremy Doku but fell short in their search of an equalizer as United avenged their 2023 FA Cup final loss. This was also their first title in the competition since 2016.

Breaking into the first team during the 2022-23 season, Mainoo truly carved a niche for himself only in this campaign, making 32 appearances in all competitions. His brilliance was there for all to see, which even drew parallels with former Manchester United midfielder Scholes.

However, he urged fans to stop the comparisons as Mainoo was much better than what he was at his age. He said:

“Don’t waste your time [comparing us]. He is 10 times the player I was at 19.”

Manchester United salvage a poor domestic campaign

Having overseen a horrid Premier League campaign, Manchester United made a statement with their FA Cup win, that also earned them a place in the UEFA Europa League next season. That’s killing two birds with one stone. Although it doesn’t hide their problems, United at least have a breather, and gave their fans something to celebrate this summer.
