Battlegrounds Mobile India, popularly known as BGMI, stands at the apex of mobile gaming in the country. The mobile game has garnered over 100 million downloads across the Play Store and App Store, serving as a testament to its immense popularity within the Indian gaming ecosystem. The game boasts fans across a wide range of age groups. From kids to grown-up adults, many consider it to be more than just a game. BGMI fans often see the game as a means to express, communicate, and connect with new people, all while teaming up in a virtual world.

The battle royal game initially made its way into the Indian gaming ecosystem as PUBG Mobile (PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds) in March 2018. The game peaked in popularity within a year of its launch as several creators began streaming it on YouTube. The immersive gameplay that users received on their smartphones played a huge factor in its initial rise. However, the game faced a sudden halt in September 2020 when it found its way into the list of apps that were set to be banned due to privacy concerns.

After months of hiatus and closed-door meetings, Krafton was back with a bang with a country-specific game that followed all the terms and conditions of the government. The game officially returned in the month of May as BGMI 2021 for Android Users. IOS users got the chance to experience the rebranded game in August. Five years later, the game still stands at the pinnacle of Indian mobile gaming owing to its widespread streams and well-structured esports ecosystem.

What is BGMI?

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) is one of the most popular mobile games in the country. BGMI, a battle royal game of its kind, was developed by the South Korean company KRAFTON in response to the ban of PUBG Mobile in India in the year 2020. For ranked matches, the user’s character drops to one of the locations on the map. The locations are categorized into two types- hot drops and cold drops. The former drops are the locations where a large number of players are involved in gunfights. These locations generally have high loot but come with high risks of early elimination.

Cold drops are relatively safer locations where the loot is average. The player's objective is to survive till the last, eliminating the other competitors. The players need to stay within the playing zone as the match progresses, lest they face damage and may ultimately succumb to it. The players can use the in-game maps to locate potential enemies and finish them to increase their finish count. The game also offers the chance to revive teammates. The players need to communicate and strategize with their teammates and position themselves accordingly in the final zones to claim the WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER.

BGMI Game Modes

Battleground Mobile India offers multiple interesting game modes to its users. The players can choose one of the modes on the basis of their purpose, time, and needs. The game modes can be precisely categorized into three types: Ranked, Unranked, and Wow Mode. The users can choose to play any of the modes, either solo, duo, or in squads.

Classic Mode

It is the most iconic mode in BGMI, which sees a total of 100 players land on a map. Much like any other battle royal, the last individual or team surviving on the map becomes the winner. The players require proper planning, coordination, and in-game combat skills to survive. The main objective of the players in this mode is to maximize their finish count, get winner winner chicken dinner, and climb up the rankings and leaderboards. The users rise from being bronze-level players all the way up to conquerors.

Arena Mode

This mode is famous for offering quick combats in relatively small maps. The players can team up in duos and squads with the objective of claiming maximum finish points. The team that reaches the set margin of finish points or holds on to a specific zone for a set amount of time gets the win. This mode includes - Team death matches, Domination Town, Gun Game, and Assault Mode.

Arcade Mode

This mode offers quick action gameplay and is great for learning the in-game mechanics. Users can train their in-game abilities in competitive modes with fewer players and smaller zones. This mode generally includes a maximum of 40 players on a map. The only downside to arcade mode is that only two of the above-mentioned modes are available at a time. There are a variety of arcade modes for the users to hone their gun skills, such as

  • Sniper Training: The players are only allowed to combat and survive using sniper rifles, pistols, and melee in a small zone.
  • Quick Match: The players have to combat with random weapons at random drops and survive eight minutes of play.
  • War Mode: The players drop at a specific location with a specific kind of weapon and try to finish at the summit position, all while accumulating finish and revival points.

EvoGround Mode

This mode includes various arcade-style gameplay and is built for casual gamers who want to have fun in-game, as they are mostly unranked. These modes pop up for a limited time and come with their own set of rules and objectives. Some of the popular modes under this category are-

  • Infection Mode: The players need to combat zombies for survival.

Payload Mode

This mode comes with its own set of special weapons, armor, and vehicles. The players can use heavy firearms, helicopters, and tanks to eliminate their opposition. The number of players entering the map is the same as that of classic mode, but the warfare changes drastically with the involvement of heavy firearms like RPGs, tanks, and rocket launchers. The players engage in more intense battles on the modified terrains of Erangle to claim winner winner chicken dinner.

The smaller maps offer quick gun battles while the larger ones call for strategic positioning and coordination. Here is the list of BGMI maps that are available to be played for users.

Erangle

The most popular and iconic map in the game is loved by millions of players. It features a balanced terrain with an equal concentration of cities, fields, hills, and bridges. Some of the hot drops in this map include the city of Pochinki, the containers of Goregopol, and Sosnovka Military Base.

Vikendi

This map is based on the theme of a snow town. Much like Sanhok, this map too has dynamic weather, and the players indulge in semi-urban combats. Some of the hot drops of this map include- Cosmodrome and Castle.

Livik

This is one of the smallest maps in the game, with dimensions of 2x2 km. The number of players getting matched at a time ranges from 45 to 52. The match duration is also significantly smaller, as the winner is decided in 15 minutes. For ranked matches, this map offers fewer points to the players in comparison to bigger maps. Some of the hot spots on this map include Midstein and the Power Plant.

Nusa

This is the smallest map in BGMI with dimensions of only 1x1 km. The matches last for only eight minutes and offer unique features like auto-revive and Ziplines. As many as 32 players can join the lobby at once in Nusa. Some of the hot drops of this map include Kleo and Lakeside.

Karakain

This is one of the smaller maps in BGMI. Akin to Livik, this map also comes in 2x2km dimensions and offers fast-paced battles in a lobby that can have a maximum of 64 players.

Rondo

This is the newest addition to the long list of maps offered by BGMI. It is a futuristic-themed map that requires both strategic planning and zone keeping, and intense gun fights.

Saratoni

This is the bigger map for team death matches. This map accommodates a total of 16 players who are divided into two teams. The team to reach 80 finish points earlier wins the match.

BGMI offers two types of currencies. The first and the most usable one is called Unknown Cash, aka UC, while the other one is known as silver fragments. Unknown Cash can be bought in exchange for real money by the users and can be used for a variety of in-game rewards. The game offers a variety of skins and outfits in exchange for UCs, which can be bought with real cash.

However, these skins only add aesthetic decorations and are not influential in boosting the stats of either the armors or weapons in any way. The users can flex their weapons and vehicle skins to stand out in the lobby. The in-game currency can buy almost anything and everything, including crates, Royal Pass, and limited-time skins.
