ECB in Trouble? Ben Stokes Retirement Video Sparks ICC Anti-Corruption Controversy

Ben Stokes Retirement Video

Questions have been raised over whether England may have broken Test cricket’s anti-corruption regulations after releasing a video of Ben Stokes retirement informing his team-mates about his decision to step down.

Stokes announced his resignation as England captain during the recent Test at Trent Bridge. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) made the announcement public at 3:25 pm, just 15 minutes before the tea interval on the fourth day of the match, which eventually ended in a heavy defeat for England against one of the best cricket teams in the world, New Zealand.

At the same time, the ECB also published footage showing Stokes speaking to the England dressing room before the start of play that morning and informing his team-mates about his decision.

Is ECB in Trouble After Posting Ben Stokes Retirement Video?

According to a report by the BBC, the incident prompted the International Cricket Council (ICC) to send a formal letter to the ECB, claiming that releasing the dressing-room footage while the match was still in progress may have breached regulations covering players’ and match officials’ areas (PMOA) during international fixtures, and this led to the ECB ICC anti corruption charges controversy.

Under Article 2.2.11 of the PMOA minimum standards, host boards are required to “ensure that there are no fixed or temporary video cameras or other recording equipment set up within any dressing room used by the teams for the purposes of broadcasting video or audio footage”.

The ECB has chosen not to issue a statement. Despite the concerns raised, the ICC is not expected to take disciplinary action against the board. Also, on a lighter note, Ben Stokes has also responded to this allegation and satirically posted, “sack him” on his X account.

Stokes also revealed that he had trusted his management representatives, former England cricketers Neil Fairbrother and Michael Lumb, along with the ECB, to handle the timing and manner of his retirement announcement. Interestingly, he struck with the very first delivery after the news became public. Stokes then moved up to open the innings and scored 30, although England eventually suffered a defeat.

What Did Ben Stokes Say in His Retirement Video?

Ben Stokes addressed the England dressing room, revealing that the ENG vs NZ 3rd Test would be his final match as captain and his last appearance for England.

Opening Quote

There’s something I know is going to happen over the next two days, which is going to be this is my last two days as your captain, and my last two days representing England. “Reasons can wait, why. But I’ve had many trips to the well before for this team, for you blokes, for people beforehand, and I’ve got one more trip to do.

The only thing that I ask, please, is can everyone else please just do the same? “We’ve got a lot of hard work still to do, and the only thing that I want is to be able to walk off the end of that field, regardless of the result, knowing that I’ve had this group of men – and one lady [Sarah Taylor, the fielding coach] – give everything for the last two days.

“Let’s just go out there, and f-----g give absolutely everything for another two days, alright? Because that’s my only intention, and that’s where all my energy is right now. Got the emotional side out of it, but now it’s time to work. And everyone else, please just come with me.”

Closing Quote

Although the result was not in his favour in his last Test outing, but Ben Stokes was one of the best leaders out there in the red-ball format, who changed the manner and mindset of the England Cricket team.
