Counter Strike 2 Overview

Counter-Strike 2 Gameplay

Counter-Strike 2 is a tactical first-person-based multiplayer game where raw aiming skills and smart decisions matter. Those who are familiar with CS:GO should know the basic objectives of the title. Counter-Strike 2 doesn't require anything extra. Two sides: Terrorists and Counter Terrorists have different objectives around different maps. While the Terrorist side usually attempts to plant a C4 in a designated area of certain maps, the Counter-Terrorist side tries to deny entry of Ts on the bomb sites or defuse the bomb after its planting. In a classic 5v5 setup, each round starts with a buy phase with $800 dedicated to each player's bank. They must spend the money to buy dedicated body or head+body armours, utilities, and weapons to win the specific round. The ultimate success depends on economic balancing, taking map controls, and most importantly, the team coordination with the help of exceptional communication skills. If you're a beginner, make sure to dive into a dedicated article on a detailed Counter-Strike 2 Guide.

Counter-Strike 2 Maps

As of now, a total of 14 maps are available in Counter-Strike 2's competitive mode. Apart from the competitive map pool, a couple of fan-favourite community maps have also been added to the title. Here's a brief introduction to all the maps:

Dust 2: Dust 2 is the most classic and iconic map in the history of the Counter-Strike franchise. Located in Morocco, the map with a classic layout of two bombsites first appeared in Counter-Strike 1.1. The layout usually favours the T-sided players. However, due to some recent developments in the T spawn area, some might get into a debate.

Mirage: Mirage is another iconic map with a classic layout of two bomb sites. Based in Morocco, the Mid-area plays an integral role in the map. So it's recommended for both sides to take control of the area. It's also one of the highest-picked maps in the Premier mode of Counter-Strike 2.

Inferno: Inferno is a classic map featuring two bombsites and two Mid-area. It's based in Italy and surely has a static meta where it's essential to control the Alternate mid and Banana area of the map. The new Source 2 engine has made this map brighter for better visibility.

Ancient: Built across an archaeological site, De_Ancient has multiple corners to look out for. The map heavily favours players who like a tactical approach rather than a simple rush-based approach. Considering the current map pool, it's surely one of the highest-picked maps during professional matches.

Nuke: Nuke is a classic map in Counter-Strike 2, added during the first-ever iteration of CS, and has a unique layout of two bombsites. This map heavily favours players who love movement-based gameplay rather than implementing a static and aim-based approach during matches. The CTs surely have the upper hand, considering the layout of the map. Communication is the key to winning, specifically on Nuke.

Train: Originally derived from textures of Half-Life, Valve made another iconic map for players to enjoy. However, the original layout got changed to something else in Counter-Strike: Source. Instead of a traditional mid-area, players get an area named Ivy from where they can go to both the A and B sites.

Overpass: Recently added in the Counter-Strike 2 Premier mode, Overpass is a map based in Berlin, Germany. Even though it has a connector area that includes a vertical aspect to it, compared to Nuke and Vertigo, it's nothing. It also features a classic two bomb site layout where the Connector is the key to mid-round rotations. The layout could be a bit difficult for some beginners, but once they get hold of it, it should be one of the most unique maps in the map pool.

Anubis: Anubis is one of the best maps in Counter-Strike 2 due to its visibility and tactical-based gameplay. Featuring a reference to Ancient Egypt, the map with two bomb sites has a lot of entry points to work with. Considering the layout, it can be considered as one of the most balanced maps out of all in the competitive pool.

Vertigo: If anyone's a fan of vertical gameplay in Counter-Strike 2, they must always queue for Vertigo matches in the competitive map pool. Located in the United States, the map offers great visuals.

Jura: Created by ProAgressiVe, vfxNev, and Nelson, it's one of the few community-created maps that has been added in CS2. Based on the outskirts of Poland, the map offers ancient visuals along with a classic layout of two bombsites.

Grail: Created by Bartlomiej "Lizard" Guzek, Florian "flowlee" Wagner, and Radu Tanasie, this is another community-created map that has been added in CS2. Despite the location still being unknown, the map offers incredible visuals as it's based on an imaginary theme park. The map has a similarity with Overwatch 2's Blizzard World. It also features two bomb sites (A and B).

Agency: Unlike the other aforementioned maps, Agency is a hostage rescue map. The objective is quite simple, where as a Terrorist you must protect the hostage, and as a Counter Terrorist you must rescue the hostage and bring him to a safe spot. This is one of the best hostage maps that offers vertical gameplay and great lighting.

Office: The Office is another hostage rescue map available in the Counter-Strike 2 competitive map pool. First appeared in Counter-Strike Beta 7.0, the CT Spawn is inside the parking lot of an American office. It also offers a great view of the outside in snowy weather. However, the main area of the map where the hostage is held is quite tricky to reach. CTs must check every possible angle as there are a lot of corners. Those who are great at lurking can catch several enemies off guard.
Italy: Italy is another hostage group map, based on a small town in Northern Italy. Offering both close and long-range combat, the map proves its diversity. Even though most of the areas feature close-range allies, the market is considered the most spacious area that embraces long-range fights. This map first appeared in Counter-Strike Beta 6.5.

Counter-Strike 2 Ranks

The current Counter-Strike 2 competitive ranking system remains the same as CS:GO. However, the only difference is that gamers can receive different ranks for all 14 maps from the map pool. All the available ranks can be distributed into five tiers: Beginner Tier, Intermediate Tier, Advanced Tier, Expert Tier, and Top Rank. Here's a brief introduction to all the ranks available in Counter-Strike 2:

Silver Ranks (Beginner Tier)

The Silver ranks are the beginner tier of this game. This tier is distributed into five separate ranks, starting from Silver 1 to Silver Elite Master. Most of the beginners end up placing themselves in this tier. Gamers worldwide who've taken an entry into the FPS world for the first time, and mostly have no clue about the maps, spray patterns, and other basic things of the game, should find themselves in this. While most players from this tier play the game for fun and only run around the maps with the P90, some try to understand the game and weapon spray patterns to level themselves up. Here are all the ranks available on this tier:

  • Silver 1
  • Silver 2
  • Silver 3
  • Silver 4
  • Silver Elite Master

Gold Nova Ranks (Intermediate Tier)

The Gold Nova Ranks fall under the Intermediate Tier. If you're someone who already has the basic idea about the maps and knows how to utilise their raw aiming skills, you fall under this rank. They also know the basic and situational usage of the utilities. Here are all the ranks available on this tier:

  • Gold Nova 1
  • Gold Nova 2
  • Gold Nova 3
  • Gold Nova Master

Master Guardian Ranks (Advanced Tier)

As the name suggests, Master Guardian Ranks are literally the masters of the game. Starting from weapon spray patterns to movement techs, utility usage, including lineup to gamesense, everything is at their fingertips. One must spend a handful of hours to get placed in this tier. Here are all the ranks available on this tier:

  • Master Guardian 1
  • Master Guardian 2
  • Master Guardian Elite
  • Distinguished Master Guardian

Legendary Ranks (Expert Tier)

Even if someone knows all the basic techs of the game, reaching the Legendary Ranks is a bit difficult. This Expert Tier is all about gamesense and how one can execute and apply their sense during different scenarios of the game. One must know every part of the map and all the timings, like how much time it takes for CT/T side players to reach a certain area of the map. Moreover, players from this tier can easily anticipate every possible move of their opponent and can prepare a plan according to that. That said, here are all the ranks available on this tier:

  • Legendary Eagle
  • Legendary Eagle Master
  • Supreme Master First Class

Global Elite (Top Rank)

This is literally the pinnacle of the Counter-Strike 2 competitive scene. This is the highest possible rank in the title. One must spend countless hours to understand the basics and advanced-level site executions, unique retake strategies, and other key aspects to reach this ultimate rank. Players from this tier literally know every bit about the game, starting from spray pattern to utility lineups, counter-strafing to unique strategies. Only 0.8 to 2% of the whole Counter-Strike 2 player base have achieved this rank, and a chunk of them play in the professional tournaments.

Counter-Strike 2 Tournaments

Now that we've mentioned Counter-Strike 2 Tournaments, let's talk about some of the biggest tournaments of this title:

IEM Cologne

Intel Extreme Masters is a product of ESL and refers to a series of International tournaments. The IEM Cologne has a cultural history to it, as one of the organisations from here (ESL FACEIT Group) played an integral role in the rise of Counter-Strike as a global esports. That's why Cologne is best known as the “Cathedral of Counter-Strike”. Team Spirit has won the latest IEM Cologne 2025.

IEM Katowice

IEM Katowice is another popular tournament in the history of Counter-Strike that happens in Katowice, Poland. Based on Esports Charts' record, this online tournament has consistently pulled a large chunk of the audience on different streaming platforms.

ESL Pro League

The ESL Pro League is considered the premier professional CS2 tournament. Initially, the tournament used to happen based on four popular regions: Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania. However, after Season 13, the format got revamped to a unified league. 24 teams across different regions participate in this league.

Esports World Cup

Esports World Cup is the latest addition to the list of all Counter-Strike 2 tournaments. Added in 2024, the competition is fairly new and happens between 16 CS teams around the world based on their Valve Regional Standings.

Valve-Sponsored Major

First started in 2013 (back then it was CS:GO), Valve-Sponsored Major, or commonly known as “Major”, is usually sponsored by the title's publishers themselves. This is considered the biggest Counter-Strike 2 tournament in the world. With a massive prize pool of $1,250,000, the tournament is hosted by different organisers, like Blast.tv, PGL, StarLadder, and more. It follows a three-stage format where the opening stage features 16 teams around the world. Eight teams among those qualify for the primary event and participate with the direct qualifiers of the main stage. Finally, one team among all gets crowned as the champion. The recent Major tournament (BLAST Austin Major) was won by Team Vitality.
