Why BCCI is Not Finding Sponsors For India's Home Season?

3 min
BCCI title sponsorship

The BCCI is still searching for a title sponsor for the Indian cricket team’s home fixtures after failing to attract a satisfactory bid for the rights. The high valuation set by the richest cricket board in the world appears to have limited interest from brands, with the bidding process concluding without an agreement.

The Board had opened the tender process on July 20, inviting companies to acquire the sponsorship rights. Interested parties were given until August 4 to purchase the tender documents, while August 5 was set as the deadline for submitting queries and seeking clarifications. The final date for submitting bids was August 13.

Despite the completion of the formal bidding window, the BCCI has not yet secured a sponsor. Reports suggest that either there were no bids or the offers received fell short of the board’s financial expectations. The BCCI is now exploring direct discussions with potential partners to resolve the issue. Google Gemini is among the brands reportedly involved in talks, while Spinny and SBI Life have also emerged as possible contenders.

Why BCCI is Struggling to Find New Title Sponsor?

The efforts to appoint a new BCCI title sponsor for India’s home matches have reportedly been affected by the valuation of the rights. IDFC First Bank, the existing rights holder, currently pays around Rs 4.2 crore for each match, whereas the board has set a higher base price of Rs 4.75 crore per game for the next deal. The upcoming sponsorship cycle is expected to run for two years, shorter than the three-year agreement signed by IDFC First Bank in 2023.

As part of the tender conditions, the successful bidder would be associated with approximately 35 international matches during the contract period. The higher asking price, however, has reportedly made it difficult for the BCCI to secure a deal that meets its expectations. Many fans believe that until the BCCI brings back tri-series and Tests at traditional Test centres, bilaterals will continue to struggle commercially.

The tender document carried a non-refundable fee of Rs 1 lakh, with GroupM, ITW and Sporty Solutions among the reported interested parties. Also, the BCCI has initiated the process for awarding Associate Partner Rights for its events. The Request for Quotation (RFQ) document purchase window closed on August 14, followed by the clarification deadline on August 16. Interested parties have been given until August 25 to submit their quotation documents.
