Will Gautam Gambhir Be Sacked as India Head Coach?

3 min
Gautam Gambhir and Ishan Kishan

The Indian cricket team finds itself under the spotlight after a disappointing run in the ongoing T20I series against England. The reigning T20 World Cup champions have failed to live up to expectations, with inconsistent batting, ineffective bowling, squad selections and few other concerning things hurting the team's campaign. The series defeat has ignited fresh debate over India's direction in the shortest format, and attention has now shifted to what changes the BCCI could make once the tour concludes.

Will BCCI Sack Gautam Gambhir as India Head Coach?

The pressure on Gautam Gambhir Head Coach has increased following India's second successive bilateral T20I series defeat. According to an ANI report, the BCCI will conduct a detailed review of the performances of the players as well as the coaching staff after the England tour. While no decision has been taken yet, Gambhir's position is expected to come under scrutiny as part of the assessment. India had entered the England series on the back of a shock 2-0 defeat to Ireland, their first-ever bilateral T20I series loss against the Irish.

Hopes of a turnaround quickly faded in the India vs England T20I series as the hosts sealed the five-match series with a commanding victory in the fourth T20I at Bristol. Chasing 159, England reached the target in just 13.5 overs with nine wickets in hand, thanks to an unbeaten 146-run stand between Harry Brook (79*) and Phil Salt (59*). The result handed England an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series and raised questions over India's approach under the current management. India's newly appointed skipper Shreyas Iyer has come into the radar of the critics for his unpleasant outings as a skipper ever since replacing Suryakumar Yadav in the squad.

India Making Unwanted Records

India's recent run has produced a string of unwanted records. The 2-0 defeat to Ireland was India's first bilateral T20I series loss against the European side. It also marked the best T20 team in the world and the defending T20 World Cup champions' first series defeat after lifting the title, and the England loss has now made it two consecutive bilateral T20I series defeats.

Amid the ongoing England tour, India also suffered their heaviest-ever defeat in T20 Internationals when they were bowled out for just 76 while chasing 202 at Trent Bridge, losing by 125 runs. England's triumph in the ongoing series is also their first-ever bilateral T20I series win over India. With the final match still to be played, India will be eager to avoid a whitewash; however, things are not looking to go in favour of the Men in Blue.
