FPL Mystery Chip Explained: What Is It & How Does It Work?

FPL, also known as the Fantasy Premier League, is a football fantasy game based on the English Premier League matches. In it, you have to pick a team of your choice of players who will score fantasy points according to the rules of the game based on their live and real performances in the weekly games/matches/gameweeks. FPL is played throughout the season and the weekly scores are accumulated for that period to give you the final overall score. It also has chips, which are power boosters that give you an extra edge in the gameweek in which you play it. There are multiple chips like a wildcard, bench boost, etc but the newest and probably the most interesting one is the FPL mystery chip.

What is the FPL Mystery Chip?

The FPL mystery chip was announced early in the season without revealing what it was. The only thing that was revealed about the chip was the announcement time which was in December/January. Finally, the mystery chip was revealed and it was announced that this chip would be known as the Assistant Manager chip that you can use from GW24 onwards. In this chip, you have to select a manager from the available 20 teams in the league along with your squad/team and you can also change the manager next week subject to the transfer cost associated with it because once activated, the chip will remain active for 3 weeks, barring anyone to play any other chips during that period.

The manager will earn points based on the team result, goals scored and clean sheets kept. Similarly, if you select a manager and that manager plays any club that is above them in the league table by at least 5 positions, then you will earn bonus points from your picked manager. One thing to keep in mind is that the picked assistant manager will be counted as a player which means it will cost you a transfer if you change your manager the next week, and it will be counted as a player which means you can’t have more than 3 players from a club, that includes the picked manager.

How to Use Mystery Chip in FPL?

The mystery chip, now known as the Assistant Manager chip, must be used after activating the chip, as you select a manager from a club. You can’t have more than 2 other players in your squad from the same team as the manager is counted as a player which will make it 3 players in your team from the same club.

When is the best time to use the Mystery Chip?

There is no particular time that can be recognized as the best time to play the mystery chip, also known as the Assistant Manager chip, but since it was introduced in GW24, means the managers have only 15 gameweeks before the end of the season by which they need to play it. A good time to play the chip is based on the fixtures and your other chip strategies as once you activate this chip, it remains active for 3 continuous gameweeks and you can’t play any other chips during that period. So a team with good fixtures, or in form team with the chances of getting bonus points along with some double gameweek fixtures is a good period to play this chip.

How to activate the manager chip in FPL?

To activate the Assistant Manager chip in FPL, you just need to click on the Assistant Manager chip button on the My Team page and save it, and then choose your preferred manager on the transfer page and save it. In case you want to change your manager the next gameweek, then you will need to transfer out your current manager and select your next preferred manager subject to your remaining budget and maximum player criteria. Remember that your manager transfer is counted as 1 free transfer in that gameweek.
