Marcelo Bielsa came from a working-class family. He developed a passion for the sport and started his senior career as a defender at the iconic Newell’s Old Boys club. However, his playing career spanned only five years and he retired early at 25 years old to focus on his coaching career. He never played for Argentina’s senior team but represented them at the U23 level.

The first job of Bielsa as a manager was at the club he played, Newell’s Old Boys. He won several championships during his tenure and set up an exhaustive scouting system to unearth hidden gems, setting the foundations for the future success of the club. He then managed the Argentina national team for six years starting from 1998. While there were some criticisms during his tenure, he led the team to an Olympic Gold in 2004.

After spending away from coaching, he returned to manage Chile. While he did not win anything during his tenure, his style of play and the players like Arturo Vidal, and Alexis Sanchez who improved under him were some of the biggest reasons why Chile had an incredible period of success later. To this day, he is revered and adored in that country.

His Athletic Bilbao side was one of the most dangerous teams and garnered significant attention after his Athletic Bilbao side unforgettably knocked Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United out of the Europa League, beating them home and away, 5-3 on aggregate. While that side did not win any silverware, their run to the finals of both the Europa League and Copa del Rey are remembered fondly.

Bielsa later did not have long stints anywhere. He spent a season at Olympique Marseille, resigned as manager of Lazio after just two days on the job, after disagreements with the president and even left Lille after a short period.

In June 2018, Bielsa was appointed manager of the English club Leeds United. The historic club was in the Championship, longing for a return to the Premier League. His revolutionary style of play was loved by the fans and neutrals alike and after narrowly missing out in 2019, the club returned to the Premier League in style.

Many players like Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips, and Stuart Dallas, who were not known as world-beaters, thrived in his tenure and earned a lot of name and fame. After a long streak of bad results in the second season of the Premier League, Bielsa’s tenure ended, which is the longest time he has spent at any club. To this day, he is considered an icon and cult figure at the club.

He is now managing Uruguay’s national team, where the country finished third in the Copa America 2024. The team has also achieved historic wins against both Brazil and Argentina. With the FIFA World Cup coming up soon, the fans will be looking forward to it.

Marcelo is known for his innovative tactics. He is a study-worm, known to analyze and watch hours of match footage to create a tailor-made plan against each opposition. Bielsa’s signature formation in his squads is the 3–3–3–1 formation, which allows quick transitions from defending to attacking, as many of the players used in the formation can perform both defensive and attacking tasks.

Bielsa’s training methods are also known to be very tiring. Nicknamed “Murderball,” the players are divided into two teams and compete in a training match simulating real-match conditions, but the ball is continually put back into play. There are no free kicks, throw-ins, or other stoppages, which was extremely draining of the players but made them accustomed to the energetic style of play that his team requires.

This signature style of Bielsa’s has had so much influence in the football scene that many present coaches – former players under Bielsa’s command like Jorge Sampaoli, Mauricio Pochettino, and Diego Simeone – are heavily influenced by the style.

Marcelo Bielsa Net Worth

Marcelo Bielsa is not known for leading a lavish lifestyle. Even at Leeds United, he was known to live in a small house, close to the training ground of the club. So, the earnings that he might have made in his career are majorly from the salary that he used to get working for the clubs. There are no exact resources but people estimate his net worth to be around $1 million dollars.

Despite limited titles, his legacy is unmatched and his influence on the sport continues to make waves throughout the coaching community.
