Florian Wirtz Wins Germany's Player of the Year 2025

The former Bayer Leverkusen young prodigy, Florian Wirtz, has been named Germany's Player of the Year following a productive year. The Liverpool midfielder won the award with 191 votes from German sports journalists, beating Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, who got 81 votes. This award proves Wirtz is one of football’s brightest talents.

His rise began with the German club Bayer Leverkusen, where he was simply unstoppable. In the 2023/24 season, he played a key role in Leverkusen winning their first-ever Bundesliga title under the Spanish coach Xabi Alonso. The former Leverkusen midfielder also led them to German Cup glory, completing a domestic double. Their only defeat came in the Europa League final, where they lost to Atalanta. Wirtz has racked up 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen, proving his attacking playing style from time to time. Last season, he added 10 goals and 13 assists, which earned him a Ballon d’Or nomination this year.

His brilliance led to a record-breaking move to Liverpool in June 2025, resulting in over £100 million, making him one of the most expensive player in Premier League history, topping charts for both Liverpool and British football. The transfer was part of Liverpool’s push to defend their Premier League title, alongside signings like Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez.

Wirtz is already making noise at Liverpool. “I want to win everything every year,” he told the club’s website. “II would like to win everything every year! First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work. In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious.” His former coach, Xabi Alonso, now at Real Madrid, called him “world-class.” Wirtz’s vision and flair are expected to boost stars like Mohamed Salah and ease the load on Liverpool’s attack.
