30 Year Old German Defender Announces Retirement Before 2026 FIFA World Cup

Borussia Dortmund will be losing one of the elder statesmen in the squad, after defender and Germany star Niklas Sule announced his decision to call time on his professional footballing career. The former Bayern Munich star wraps up a career, marred by injuries but also one which saw him win major trophies at the club level. Sule had joined Dortmund back during the 2022/23 campaign, making 109 appearances in just 4 seasons.

The Germany National Football Team defender had a fruitful stint at German giants Bayern Munich, where he won five Bundesliga titles, one UEFA Champions League title, one FIFA Club World Cup, and two DFB Pokal trophies. He also represented his home nation in two different FIFA World Cups and also was part of the 2015/16 German Olympic Football Team, which narrowly missed out on a gold medal against Brazil National Football Team. The Niklas Sule retirement rules out the defender from making his third appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2026, scheduled to kick-off in June. While fans will be deprived of a Niklas Sule 2026 FIFA World Cup moment, they will be hoping he recovers fast before the end of the season.

Niklas Sule Injuries Took A Toll On His Career

Missing action and sitting on the sidelines is painful for any player, and it is a feeling all too familiar for Sule for both club and country. The 30-year-old had injured his knee in last month's Bundesliga defeat against Hoffenheim, and only managed to make only 12 appearances this season.

Talking about his knee injury, he stated how injuries took a toll on him mentally, as Sule recalled:

“What I felt when our doctor did the drawer test [used to check for a possible ligament tear] in the dressing room at Hoffenheim, when he looked at the physio and shook his head, and the physio did it too and didn’t feel any resistance either, I went into the shower and cried for 10 minutes. In that moment, I really thought it had torn…When I went for the MRI the next day and got the good news [that it wasn’t a cruciate ligament tear], it was a thousand percent clear to me that it was over."

Will Niklas Sule Make One Final Appearance In Bundesliga?

The German defender could have a small window to mark his return for the final game of the season against Werder Bremen. Sule's knee injury was going to keep him out till May 15, but the desire to don the Borussia Dortmund jersey one final time could see him make a comeback before the reported date.

While he is certain to miss Dortmund's final home game of the season against Frankfurt, the hope is that the former Bayern Munich star gets one final hurrah to sign off in style.
