West Ham United star Lucas Paqueta will undergo a three-week hearing for the betting charges that have been placed against him. The Brazilian has been charged for purposely conceding yellow cards to disrupt the betting market for personal returns. “He is accused of attempting to directly influence the outcome, conduct, or any other aspect of matches by deliberately seeking a yellow card to improperly impact betting markets for personal gain,” the FA stated.
The investigation has been underway since the summer of last year and it also impacted his possible move to Manchester City. While Paqueta has strongly denied all the charges against him, the FA is strongly pushing for a lifetime ban on the Brazilian.
Lucas Paqueta’s comments
The 27-year-old midfielder recently posted a statement on his social media handles where he expressed his disappointment against the FA. He has promised his full cooperation and has refrained from making any further comments until the trial is over.
“I am extremely surprised and upset that the FA has chosen to accuse me. For the past nine months, I have cooperated fully with their investigation and have provided all information at my disposal. I entirely deny the charges and will do everything in my power to clear my name. Due to the ongoing process, I will refrain from further comments.”
