La Liga: Sevilla Vs Real Betis Derby Match Suspended After Home Fans Cause Chaos in Stands

The Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in Sevilla was on the receiving end of a huge brawl on Sunday (Nov 30) as the local derby against Real Betis was suspended. The incident occurred in the 88th minute as match referee Munuera Montero had to call off the match temporarily. Real Betis, Sevilla’s arch-rivals in the city, were leading 2-0 away from home, leading to discontent amongst the home fans.

The derby contest between Sevilla Vs Real Betis, which was the talk of the town on Sunday, had to be halted by the referee after the local fans began throwing objects onto the field. The disturbance was enough for the referee to suspend the contest. The discontent amongst the locals was clearly visible when Sevilla fans were not happy as their side was on the receiving end of a rare home defeat against the arch-rivals.

The incident was a huge talking point considering Betis had a rare lead given to them on enemy territory. First, former West Ham United player Pablo Fornals opened the scoring in the 54th minute when he was through on goal. The lead was doubled in the 68th minute by Sergi Altimira as an away win was on the cards.

However, it was the 84th minute when things took an unexpected turn as Isaac Romero was sent off for lashing out at Valentin Gomez. It was the start of the brawl, as minutes later, the referee had to stop the match with fans showing their anger. Objects were thrown at the officials and the players, and immediate action was taken by the referee to halt the match with just a few minutes and stoppage time remaining.

Match Resumes: Real Betis Win

The match was eventually resumed as Real Betis held on to their lead against the 10-man Sevilla to register back-to-back wins against their arch-rivals. The win sees Real Betis go fifth in the standings with six wins and six draws, while they have lost only two matches in the domestic season so far. Sevilla, on the other hand, are in the bottom half of the table with 16 points in 14 matches and are already looking a shadow of themselves.

They have so far lost eight matches and won five, while only one of their 14 matches has ended in a draw.

Huge Fine for Sevilla?

While a huge fine should be the next step from La Liga as regulations go, Sevilla should also be scared of further sanctions. Failing to control the mob and causing insecurity to players and rival fans could result in a huge fine, while playing behind closed doors could also follow as part of the precautionary measures to avoid further such incidents. However, it is unlikely the stadium could be closed, but a hefty fine should be on its way.
