Why did Wesley Fofana remove all posts? Is he leaving Chelsea?

The 2025-26 football season is up and running with all major leagues already underway. While everyone is all excited and raring to go in the new season, Chelsea's Wesley Fofana has raised eyebrows with his moves off the pitch. The Blues' defender has deleted everything related to Premier League giants Chelsea on his Instagram and has left fans thinking about his future at the club. There could be a lot of possibilities behind his move, with his desire to leave Stamford Bridge being one of the top probabilities.

This could very well be the beginning of a chaotic saga between the club and the player. Interestingly, this move comes in a couple of days after The Blues' goalless draw against Crystal Palace in their opening game, where Fofana was benched by Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.

Is Fofana leaving Chelsea?

Fofana's future at Chelsea remains uncertain. While there's no official confirmation about his desire to leave London, his Instagram activity suggests so. Back in 2022, when the defender was linked to Chelsea, he did something very similar. The fact that he has removed all the content related to the Blues rings a bell. He deleted all the posts related to Leicester City back in the day before securing a move to Chelsea.

The 24-year-old even went on to post a controversial Instagram story, which read, “My father told me: You’re going to anger a lot of people when you start doing what’s best for you. And I started to realise it.” There's an old pattern that he is following, and if we go by the book, it could very well be that he is on the verge of leaving Chelsea. But, where is his next destination? It remains to be seen. Moreover, Fofana has had a tough time ever since his arrival at the club. He has faced a lot of injuries and has managed to rack up very few appearances in the last three years.

During an interview with The Standard in 2024, Fofana was asked about his future at the club, and he said, "We'll see one day. I still have a contract until 2029 and we'll see after that. I have never hidden it, [Marseille] is my city, my club, I am an OM supporter. We'll see if I end up being at Marseille in a few years, or if I stay at Chelsea for the rest of my career."

Chelsea landed the Frenchman for a whopping £70 million from fellow English side Leicester City on a seven year deal making him one of the most expensive defenders in the history of the Premier League. But, Fofana didn't quite live up to his billing and was stressed with a lot of injuiries and setbacks. Chelsea and big money signings have not gone hand-in-hand and such was the case with the 24-year-old. His expensive price tag has always put in under a lot of limelight and pressure which has also played a role in his downfall.

The defender is under contract with the English giants until 2029 which means he still has four more years left on his contract. As things stand, Chelsea might be happy to let go of Fofana. He hasn't really performed or has been consistent. Therefore, letting him go would free up a lot of space. A move to Marseille could definitely be on the cards with the players expressing his desire to play for French side. But, since nothing is official, it remains to be seen how this saga unfolds in the coming days.
