What is the Champions League Playoff?
The new format has this addition as the top eight teams get direct entry into the round of 16 while teams from ninth to 24th will have to play an extra game to ensure their entry into the next stage. This extra game is termed as the playoff fixture in the new Champions League format. The teams that finished the league phase between ninth and 16th will be seeded for the playoffs and will face a team placed 17th to 24th. The seeded team, in most cases, will play the return leg at home.
Based on their performance in the eight-match league stage, the possible opponents are predetermined. Teams in ninth and tenth place, for instance, will play teams who finished in 23rd or 24th place; teams in 11th or 12th place will be chosen to play either the 21st or 22nd place teams.
