Aston Villa Player Ratings

Here are Aston Villa Player Ratings:
Goalkeeper
Marco Bizot- 6/10
Among the many saves Marco Bizot made today, his early-minute save to deny Elanga in 1v1 was the most important one. Throughout the game, Marco Bizot was tested multiple times from inside and outside his box. He was certainly the busier goalkeeper between the two.
Defenders
Matty Cash- 4.5/10
Matty Cash was probably the player for Aston Villa who had more space around him today. Even though he had a decent defensive performance in the game today, making interceptions and taking the sting out of attacks from the flanks, his attacking contributions were only subpar.
Ezri Konsa- 4/10
Ezri Konsa was certainly not a great center-back partner to Tyrone Mings today. The defender looked good going forward as he was with his defensive duties. Even though Newcastle were in the Aston Villa box on multiple occasions to get the lead of the match, his positioning and clearances were crucial to deny the travelling team an early lead. But his second-half performance was poor. He was booked with a red card in the second half for stopping Gordon illegally.
Tyrone Mings- 6/10
Tyrone Mings' physical presence in the box was important for Aston Villa today, especially to keep Anthony Gordon in check, as the winger had to play at an unfamiliar position. Moreover, his leadership at the back was crucial in keeping the defense line sharp at every moment, given Newcastle came asking questions again and again.
Lucas Digne- 6/10
With the attacking threat of Elanga and Trippier, Lucas Digne had his hands full today with defensive duties. The left-back did extremely well as he kept the right flank of Newcastle United shut for the majority of the game. Moreover, he looked exceptional while going forward.

Midfielders
Boubacar Kamara- 5/10
Boubacar Kamara maintained 0.05 xG and 0.02 xA throughout the first 60 minutes of the game. In terms of attacking threat, he was one of the key players for Aston Villa today. He maintained 87% passing accuracy throughout the first half.
Andre Onana- 5/10
Like his midfield peers, Andre Onana had a better game in the second half. He maintained a 0.01 xA throughout the first hour of the game. Moreover, he maintained a 77% passing accuracy and was one of the important players in Aston Villa's midfield today.
Morgan Rogers- 5/10
By the end of the first half, Morgan Rogers covered almost 5.5 km distance in the pitch. He maintained an 85% passing accuracy. Even though his performance was nothing more than average in the first half, he was a new player in the second half.
Youri Tielemans- 6/10
Youri Tielemans was the soul of Aston Villa today. From his defensive contributions to his attacking plays, it was clear that Aston Villa looked way better when Youri Tielemans saw more balls at his feet. By the end of the first half, he covered more than 5.5 km on the pitch.
John McGinn- 5.5/10
John McGinn, the captain, looked rather out of touch today at the flanks. He gave away the ball on multiple occasions and failed to rally up the attack in the first half. Throughout the game, John McGinn maintained 60% passing accuracy.
Forwards
Ollie Watkins- 5/10
There were certainly more expectations on Ollie Watkins. While the Englishman looked lively going forward and pressing the ball, his center-forward runs were pretty much not there in the first half. Moreover, his positioning in the box whenever the deliveries came from the flanks was not ideal.

Substitutions
Donyell Malen- 4/10
Donyell Malen came onto the game in the 83rd minute to replace McGinn.
Manager
Unai Emery- 4/10
Unai Emery was the animated manager on the touchline. Reasonably so, as the hosts had a horrible start to the game and they were outplayed for the majority of the game.

Newcastle United Player Ratings

Here are Newcastle United Player Ratings:
Goalkeeper
Nick Pope- 5/10
It was a series of textbook saves that Nick Pope had to make for the majority of the game. When made comparison, he was certainly the least tested keeper between the two. However, his leadership at the back was very important to keep the defense line's solidity.
Defenders
Tino Livramento- 6.5/10
As usual, Tino Livramento was the most active defender in Newcastle's backline. From ball recoveries due to the team's overall sloppy plays to forward runs on the left flank, the Englishman looked sharp right from the beginning. His interceptions and clearances were crucial in keeping the dangers at bay on the left side.
Dan Burn- 5.5/10
Even though Dan Burn had very less to do in Newcastle United today, it was a display every time he went forward for the set piece as Aston Villa players kept a close eye on the defender, trying their very best to keep him from getting the ball in the air. His towering presence at the back also denied Aston Villa chances in the air.
Fabian Schar- 5.5/10
Fabian Schar wore the cautious shoes today as the defender kept it simple. However, he was essential in the backline of Newcastle United whenever danger brewed from counterattacks. On rare occasions when he went forward, he did not hesitate to take his chances, whether it was from the box or right on the edge of it.
Kieran Trippier- 5.5/10
Like Livramento, Kieran Trippier had a busier role for Newcastle today. From his defensive duties and ball progression to pinpoint deliveries in the box and around it, he was in the zone for the traveling team and looked dangerous at the flank every time he had space to make a cross in the box.

Midfielders
Joelinton- 5/10
Joelinton was perhaps the most invisible midfielder for Newcastle today, especially in the first half. Be it his playmaking duties or ball-winning duels, for the majority of the game, the Brazilian was pretty much invisible for Newcastle today. He picked up the first yellow card of the game.
Bruno Guimaraes- 5.5/10
Like Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes was all over the pitch at the beginning of the first half, trying to have more control of the game. It took a while, but as Newcastle gained more control of the ball, Newcastle's quality in the midfield was seen at Villa Park today. As the match went on, he was seen more on the attacking front.
Sandro Tonali- 6/10
It took Sandro Tonali a while to get a hold of the game, especially since both of the teams had their fair share of scrappy plays right at the beginning of the game. However, as time went on, the Italian midfielder and his midfield peers started to have more control of the game.
Forwards
Harvey Barnes- 6/10
Harvey Barnes was arguably the most promising player in the game today in terms of creating chances. It is not easy to play so freely when you are travelling to Villa Park to face Aston Villa. Barnes created two clear-cut chances in the first half that only needed to be shown direction from within the box.
Anthony Gordon- 5.5/10
Given the Isak drama with Liverpool and Newcastle, Anthony Gordon had to adapt himself to the center-forward role today. Even though the Englishman is a talented forward and has the tactical understanding of the game to add value to the role, certain times in the game showcased the need for a proper number 9.
Anthony Elanga- 5/10
It was a debut game for Anthony Elanga, who came to Newcastle this season. In the 3rd minute of the game, he had a clear chance after a mishap from Aston Villa defenders. However, the winger was shut down by Marco Bizot's authoritative save and quick decision-making.
Substitutions
Jacob Murphy- 4/10
Jacob Murphy came onto the game in the 77th minute. It was the first substitution of the game. Anthony Elanga was substituted for the introduction.
Lewis Miley- 4/10

William Osula- 4/10
William Osula came onto the game in the 89th minute to try and change the course of the game.
Manager
Eddie Howe- 5/10
Eddie Howe was certainly the happier manager between the two. However, he would be upset knowing his team could not capitalize on the chances, especially after the hosts were down to 10 men.
Sportsdunia Player of the Match is Tino Livramento.
