Summary
The 61st edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy saw the friendly cup tournament return to the Camp Nou after 2022, as Barcelona hosted Egyptian club Al Ahly. Following the success of the 2025 edition, where the Blaugranas beat Como 1907, Hansi Flick's men were looking to have a repeat of the same before commencing their domestic league action.
FC Barcelona started strongly and had the most possession for most of the game, as everyone expected them to. Al Ahly, on the other hand, tried to take Barcelona out on the counter-attack, but beating their tricky high line was too difficult.
One of the best football clubs in the world currently, FC Barcelona, opened the scoring in the 30th minute, when Raphinha played a meaty through ball behind the Al Ahly right-back to Alejandro Balde, and the fullback just had to find Hamza Abdelkarim in the box, who tapped home from six yards out.
The 18-year-old forward put his hands up as a form of respect towards his former club, and didn't celebrate much after the goal, but one could say that he was feeling all sorts of emotions at that point as he stood staring at the ground quietly for a few moments.
The Blaugranas got their luck favoured, as Hady Reyad failed to control a ball in the penalty area and Raphinha was on hand to pounce on that quickly. The centre-back, in a desperate effort to win the ball back, pushed the Brazilian to the ground, resulting in a spot-kick just before halftime. The new Barcelona captain didn't miss from the spot, although Mostafa Ahmed Shobeir had guessed it right.
Al Ahly showed some courage in the second half, and they were rewarded immediately, as Zizo found the back of the net from a swift counterattack in the 51st minute. Shobeir kept out quite a few shots to keep the Blaugranas out of third-goal range.
Anthony Gordon had a chance to make it three for Barcelona in injury time, but his penalty kick was well saved by the substitute goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
Ultimately, Barcelona maintained their winning streak in the Joan Gamper Trophy as they look well-oiled and well-settled to give a proper charge to defend their La Liga title this season.
