Bayern Munich 1-2 Inter Milan Player Ratings: Inter Punish Wasteful Bavarians To Take Big Lead To San Siro

Bayern Munich started the game on the front foot, dominating the majority of the possession. Their first chance came in the 7th minute when Michael Olise found space to rifle a shot past the goal. The Frenchman was a menacing factor for the Inter backline, as he became the creator to set up a chance for Harry Kane in the 14th minute, but his header was saved by Yann Sommer. Two minutes later, Olise had another shot saved by the goalkeeper.
The winger then laid off a nice pass to send Raphael Guerreiro through on goal in the 20th minute, only to see his effort denied. He had another powerful shot denied two minutes later. Bayern had a huge chance to take the lead in the 26th minute after Olise played Kane in the box with an open goal in front of him, but he guided his shot to hit the bar and go out.
Inter made them pay for that in the 38th minute when a sweeping attacking move saw Carlos Augusto swing in a cross that Marcus Thuram laid off to Martinez, who smashed a slick outside-of-the-right-foot shot into the back of the net. Bayern didn’t have an immediate response to the late penalty call being waved off after Leroy Sane’s pass seemingly struck Matteo Darmian’s shoulder in stoppage time.
Lautaro Martinez troubled the hosts with his clever work early in the second half, even having a shot saved in the 56th minute. Josip Stanisic and Guerreiro both put some effort over the bar in the 62nd and 64th-minute marks. Kane had another effort go wide in the 80th minute. Then, in the 85th minute, substitute Thomas Muller got at the end of Konrad Laimer’s cross to tap in the equalizer.
Inter, however, wouldn’t be pleased with a draw. They fearlessly started pushing forward, capitalizing on Bayern’s high line as Augusto played a cross for substitute Davide Frattesi to smash into the back of the net. Kane had another effort denied late on, with the visitors ultimately heading into the second leg with a huge advantage.

Outwitted for Martinez’s super goal, but made a strong save to deny him a second in the second half. Sharp with his passing, especially the long balls to trouble Inter.
RB – Konrad Laimer – 7.5/10
A proactive presence on the right. Defensively pretty solid most of the time, winning key duels, despite failing to stop Augusto’s cross for the opener. Linked nicely with Olsie and swung in several excellent crosses. Played a great pass to set up Muller’s goal.
CB – Eric Dier – 5/10
Pretty composed at the back, reading the moves well to come up with some key challenges. He regained possession multiple times and won duels, but failed to much to stop Martinez’s goal. Played Augusto onside for Frattesi’s goal, failing to mark him too.
CB – Kim Min-Jae – 5.5/10
Kim won quite a few key duels to frustrate Inter’s forwards. But he switched off for the opener, failing to properly mark Thuram. Despite making key challenges, his tendency to switch off cost him.

The 25-year-old worked had to neutralize Inter’s threat through his side, making some key challenges. Carried the ball forward nicely, but this crossing was awry and he missed a scoring chance too.

Kimmich did a great job in moving the ball around nicely and helping with the build-up play. He made some nice tackles, but couldn’t inspire his side with any chances created.
CM – Leon Goretzka – 5.5/10
A bullish figure in midfield, using his physicality and defensive traits to win back possession several times. He couldn’t really create much or get at the end of chances.
RW – Michael Olise – 7.5/10
The brightest spark in the Bayern frontline. He constantly tormented the defenders with his movement and smart final delivery. Created a flurry of big chances with his excellent final delivery, being robbed of an assist. Tested Sommr with some great shots too.
AM – Raphael Guerreiro – 5/10
The 31-year-old didn’t really work out in that no.10 role. He had one shot on target saved in the first half but failed to create anything or bring that spark in the attacking third.

Sane made some nice runs through the wide areas, but his final product was awry. Despite moving into empty space, his decisions were not the the smartest.

Kane failed to prove his quality as a ‘big game player’. He got a few great chances but failed to really deliver. Missed an open chance in the first half and were trifled off in the second half.
SUB – Thomas Muller – 7.5/10
Rolled back the years by bringing back his predatorial nature. He perfectly anticipated Laimer’s cross to score his goal, even though it went in vain.
SUB –Sacha Boey – 5/10
Caught in a bad position for the second goal and failed to add any creative threat.
SUB – Serge Gnabry – N/R
Failed to add anything special in the final third after coming on.
Manager – Vincent Kompany – 5/10
Kompany took a risk at playing Guerreiro as the no.10, something that impacted the creativity of his side’s attack. His side was quite wasteful and failed to break the Inter backline, mostly for having few players in their final third. His high defensive line ultimately cost him, helping Inter for both goals. His substitutions had mixed results, with Muller scoring but the others not being so good.

Pavard was caught out of position at times and made a slight error for that big Kane chance, but was mostly pretty good. He anticipated moves nicely to come up with some key clearances and interceptions.
CB – Francesco Acerbi – 6/10
The experienced Italian held together a solid defensive shape. He marshaled his defenders well and timed his position to come up with eight crucial clearances. But he lost the mark on Muller for his goal.
LCB – Alessandro Bastoni – 7.5/10
Bastoni was probably the most proactive and sturdy Inter Milan defender on the night. Read the Bayern moves impressively, winning nine duels and ruining a lot of their moves.

Darmian might’ve been sloppy with his passing and creative outlet, but did a decent defensive job, making some key challenges to frustrate Sane & co.
CM – Nicolo Barella – 7/10
The Italian midfielder was energetic and reactive in the midfield. He regained possession several times and was slick with passing the ball along, beating the press nicely. Made an excellent pass to send Augusto through for the second goal.

Calhanoglu had no issues playing deeper than usual. He showcased positive energy by winning some key challenges in midfield and also moved the ball along nicely. Tested the goalkeeper with some decent efforts.

LWB – Carlos Augusto – 7/10
Augusto had a lot of trouble dealing with the tricky Olise, often being caught in awkward positions against him. Much better going forward, making a stellar pass that resulted in the goal and also assisting the second.

Failed to stop Laimer’s cross for the equalizer.
Nicolo Zalewski – N/R
Helped his side get the job done.
Manager – Simone Inzaghi – 8.5/10
Inzaghi managed to tactically outwit Kompany by getting many things right for his side. For one, his approach was pragmatic and brave, as his side defended deep but was not scared of controlling possession and moving it forward quickly. Their quick attacking moves resulted in both goals and playing a three-man midfield helped them disrupt Bayern’s flow too. His substitutions were great too, with Frattesi making the difference!
