Summary
The Bosnia & Herzegovina vs Qatar game from Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup was a tale of surviving qualification to the Round of 32. Both teams came into this game with just a point and needed a win at all costs to stay alive in the tournament.
The first half saw the Bosnia & Herzegovina national football team being the dominant side. They were more clinical on the ball and used their physicality quite well to win duels in the middle of the park.
The Bosnians drew first blood as 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic danced past three Qatari defenders to strike a thunderous shot past Abunada in the 29th minute, who couldn't reach the ball even on a full stretch.
The lead was doubled in the five minutes later, when Sead Kolasinac crossed it deep into the box for Edin Dzeko, whose shot deflected off Sultan Al Brake, leaving Mahmud Abunada scrambling as he had already committed to the other side. The ball rolled into the back of the net, leaving Qatar's hopes of qualification in the mud.
Dzeko was through once again after Ivan Basic set him up with a nice through ball. Still, the legendary Bosnia & Herzegovina striker saw his shot bounce off the far post, denying him a goal and Besic his second assist of the game.
However, the last fifteen minutes of the half were when the Qatar national football team decided to turn it around. Pedro Miguel's cross found Edmílson Junior at the far post, who teed it up for Hassan Al Haidos to toe poke it home from close range.
Julen Lopetegui's side came close once again as Akram Afif put Pedro Miguel through on goal on the right side of the Bosnian penalty box. The right back steadied himself and took a vicious shot at the far post, only to see his effort come off the woodwork.
The second half saw Qatar play with a bit more intensity. Akram Afif came the closest as his shot rippled the side netting, and many of the Qatar fans had already started to celebrate, thinking it was a goal.
Nevertheless, their efforts went in vain as in the 80th minute, Ermin Mahmic chipped in with a deflected goal after a lot of frantic play in the penalty box, sealing Qatar's fate in this edition. Bosnia & Herzegovina finish third in this group, and await the results of the other groups to find out if they qualify as one of the best eight third-placed teams into the Round of 32.
