Summary

  • James Garner opened the scoring for Everton in the 34th minute with a beautiful low curler.
  • Hayden Hackney volleyed Thierno Barry's cross in the 45th minute to double the lead for the Toffees.
  • Thierno Barry put the final nail in the coffin for Matthias Jaissle's side in the 69th minute with a strong finish, assisted by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall; Dan Burn pulled one back for Newcastle with a header in the 88th minute.

Everton played out an intriguing EFL Carabao Cup fourth-round game against Newcastle United; a game which had all the ingredients to be the one to watch out for the neutrals. The two mid-table Premier League clubs clashed at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and the hosts were clearly the superior side in the first half.

With 58% possession and an xG of 1.37, Everton made their chances count. Newcastle's failure to clear the ball on the left flank found Hayden Hackney in the danger area, who played his midfield partner James Garner into the box, and the 25-year old midfielder curled one in at Lukás Hornícek's far post to give the hosts the lead in the 34th minute.

A quick counterattack saw Thierno Barry get to the end of a loose ball after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was brought down following a tremendous run down the middle. Barry crossed it in for Hayden Hackney, who timed his run to perfection and scored with a first-time finish to double the lead for the Toffees right at the stroke of halftime.

Newcastle United came out with all they had in the second half, as they pushed for a goal with fresh legs such as Joelinton, Anthony Elanga, and Yoane Wissa. However, nothing seemed to work for them.

David Moyes' side went and got the third to end the game as a contest, as Garner fed Dewsbury-Hall in the box with a cute through ball, with the latter cutting it back for Barry, who took a touch before finishing smoothly into the top-left corner in the 69th minute.

Daniel Burn headed one in from a Joseph Willock cross in the 88th minute, but the damage was already done. The players got into a bit of a scuffle after the goal, which saw at least two players from each side receive a yellow card.

The win secured Everton's place in the quarterfinals, where they will meet the infamous Fleetwood Town FC, who just beat the current Premier League champions on penalties in this very round.
