Ipswich Town 0–4 Arsenal Player Ratings: Leandro Trossard Brace Powers Gunners Dominating Win Over the Hatters

Arsenal picked up a dominant 4-0 win over Ipswich Town at Portman Road on April 20, 2025. The Gunners had total control of the game, with Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli scoring in the first half. Trossard completed his brace in the second half before a late goal from Ethan Nwaneri helped Mikel Arteta’s side get back to winning ways in style in the Premier League.

Even though Ipswich Town began the game with a burst of energy, Arsenal started taking control after the early stutter. The Gunners had total control over possession and had a little chance in the 11th minute when Gabriel Martinelli was played into the box, but scuffed his shot. However, Leando Trossard was in the right place at the right time inside the box to power a close-range shot into the back of the net in the 14th minute.

The Belgian forward had another shot attempt sky over the bar four minutes later. Bukayo Saka whipped in a devious corner in the 24th miunte, but Mikel Merino’s header went wide. Merino made up for that in the 28th minute, as he cleverly tipped a pass for Gabriel Martinelli to convert and make it 2-0. Things went from bad to worse four minutes later, as the hosts went down to 10 men as full-back Leif Davis got sent off for studs-up tackle on Saka.

The English winger became enemy No. 1 in the stadium after that, which might’ve impacted his mindset. Saka swerved a curling shot just wide of the bar in the 36th minute, before producing a shocking miss from open range in the 38th minute after Merino played him in. Bukayo wasted another chance six minutes later, placing a close-range shot wide.

Arsenal started the second half in blistering fashion, with Martin Odegaard having a sharp shot saved in the 47th minute. Ipswich Town’s first major chance came in the 56th minute when George Hirst moved hi way outside the box but saw his shot go wide. Arsenal put the game to bed in the 69th minute when a clever short corner routine saw Rice find Trossard in the box and the Belgian forward smash a shot into the goal.

Substitute Ethan Nwaneri also got into the act in the 88th minute when his shot was deflected into the back of the net to make it 4-0 and grab a perfect win for Arsenal, who have delayed Liverpool’s Premier League title win by grabbing these three points and also sealed Ipswich’s relegation. Here are the Ipswich Town vs Arsenal Player Ratings.

Ipswich Town Player Ratings

Ipswich Town winger Ben Johnson competes with Ben White (Ipswich Town | X)

GK – Alex Palmer – 5/10

Palmer was not able to react quickly enough for either of the three goals. It was tough for him to save the first two, but he was outwitted a bit too easily for the third goal. Made a nice save late on.

RB – Axel Tuanzebe – 5/10

Tuanzebe was given a lot of trouble by Martinelli and was horribly out of position for the winger’s goal as well. He made some nice timely clearances, but his positional issues cost his side at times.

CB – Dara O’Shea – 3/10

O’Shea had a pretty dismal outing as he was caught in awkward positions in almost all three goals. Couldn’t mark Trossard for either of his two goals, and was caught in a bad area for the second one too. Nutmegged for the opening goal. The fourth goal also deflected off him into the back of the net.

CB – Jacob Greaves – 4.5/10

Greavs made quite a few key clearances to help his side, but his lack of positional sense caused his team to fall into bad positions. He was in some bad positions for the first two goals like his fellow centre-back.

LB – Leif Davis – 2/10

Davis was tormented by Saka from the get-go, failing to get close to him or stop him from whipping in the two dangerous crosses for the first two goals. Sent off for a horrible studs-up challenge.

CM – Sam Moray – 7/10

Moray can probably hold his head high after producing an energetic performance, showing some character for his side. He was energetic in the middle, winning seven duels and five recoveries too.

CM – Jens-Lys Cajuste – 5/10

The 25-year-old was not really able to do much about Arsenal’s movement and flow through the central areas. He couldn’t really close the gaps in the midfield or make any major challenges either.

AM – Julio Enciso – 6.5/10

Enciso was a bright spark in a dull half from Ipswich. He made a few nice dribbles, troubling the defenders, and passed the ball forward nicely. Taken off at half-time.

RW – Ben Johnson – 5.5/10

Johnson was pretty disciplined with his work on the right wing. He made some nice forward runs and passed the ball around nicely, but was not able to create anything noteworthy.

LW – Jack Clarke – N/R

Clarke showed some nice energy with his movement in the first half, passing the ball nicely. Had to be sacrificed because of Davis’ sending off.

CF – George Hirst – 6/10

Hirst had a frustrating outing against the Gunners because of his teammates’ inability to play him in much. He created a chance for himself around the hour mark but was unlucky to see that go wide. Caught in a bad position for the second goal.

SUB – Cameron Burgess – 6/10

Had a bit of trouble dealing with Saka after coming on, but didn’t make any major errors like Davis.

SUB – Jack Taylor – 6/10

Added a bit more steel and energy to his side’s midfield, helping them defend a bit more strongly.

SUB – Massimo Luongo – N/R

Couldn’t do much in the late phase of the match.

SUB – Liam Delap – N/R

Delap couldn’t get to the end of anything noteworthy late on.

SUB – Conor Chaplin – N/R

Had a quiet late cameo.

Manager – Kieran McKenna – 4/10

McKenna couldn’t inspire a special performance from his players. His defensive organization wasn’t that solid, causing Ipswich Town’s backline to be opened up too easily. Things got way worse for him after his side went down to 10 men after the half-hour mark, and they couldn’t recover after that.

GK – David Raya – 6/10

Raya had a very comfortable and easy game, not having anything noteworthy to save. Sharp in his goal and made some nice forward passes.

RB – Ben White – 7.5/10

White was quite proactive on the right, making some excellent forward runs to help his side. Neutralized most of Ipswich’s moves on his side, winning a few key duels.

CB – William Saliba – 7.5/10

Saliba commanded over an impenetrable defensive line for his side to frustrate the hosts. He neutralized Hirst’s threat with his composed defensive work, winning some important duels. Completed 99% of his passes!

CB – Jakub Kiwior – 7/10

Kiwior held together a saturdy defensive line with his partner-in-crime and maintained impressive positioning to maintain calmness at the back. He made quite a few vital clearances to keep things composed.

LB – Oleksandr Zinchenko – 7/10

Zinchenko was mostly involved in helping with the build-up play, making some smart forward passes with his decent positioning. Outmaneuevered at times, but mostly did his job well. Grabbed an assist for Nwaneri’s goal.

CM – Declan Rice – 8/10

Rice continued his brilliant form with another solid display in the midfield. He helped his side dominate things by passing the ball around nicely and being sharp in making 12 possession recoveries. Capped off a great performance with a smart assist for Trossard’s second.

CM – Mikel Merino – 8/10

Merino added a lot of unpredictability with his clever final passes inside the box. He set up Martinelli’s with a brilliant pass and was robbed of an assist after slotting Saka into the box. Won 10 duels as well!

CM – Martin Odegaard – 7.5/10

The Arsenal skipper maintained total control over how his side created their attacking patterns. He made some really clever passes and longballs, and played a key role in the opening goal too. Struck the post with a nice shot late on.

RW – Bukayo Saka – 7/10

Saka was almost unplayable for the Ipswich defenders because of his stellar movement. He played a role in both goals, swinging in inviting crosses for his teammates. But his finishing was awry, as he missed a few easy chances after the sending off.

LW – Gabriel Martinelli – 7.5/10

Martinelli was a troublesom figure on the left wing, making some brilliant forward runs to help push his side forward. Got in the right place to score Arsenal’s second goal and made some nice runs too.

CF – Leandro Trossard – 9/10

Trossard enjoyed all the freedom he received in the final third, nailing his positioning by reading his teammates’ attacking patterns well. He produced a neat close-range finish for his first goal before brilliantly outwitting defenders for his smashing second goal.

SUB – Myles Lewis-Skelly – 6.5/10

Lewis-Skelly helped his side maintain totally control with his smart passing in the midfield area and improve their flow too.

SUB – Ethan Nwaneri – 7/10

Nwaneri troubled the hosts with his clever movement in the final third. Took a nice shot on target for his goal, which was a bit fortunate because of the deflection too.

SUB – Kieran Tierney – 6.5/10

Tierney helped add some more energy and defensive sturdiness on the left flank after coming on.

SUB – Raheem Sterling – 6/10

Sterling made a few nice dribble runs forward, but his final product wasn’t really that noteworthy.

SUB – Nathan Butler-Oyedeji – N/R

Made his Premier League debut for Arsenal and had a late darting shot on goal saved well.

Manager – Mikel Arteta –

Arteta set up his side perfectly to ensure that they were able to dominate Ipswich Town and neutralize their attacking threat. Not only was his side defensively sturdy, but extremely sharp and proactive going forward. His smart midfield selection ensured that Arsenal controlled the game, and he saw his players clinically finish their chances too. Even his substitutions worked well.
