After a string of poor performances from Andre Onana, Amorim decided to put his faith in the backup keeper Altay Bayindir. Newcastle put the ball in the back of the net within 45 seconds, but it was rightfully ruled out for offside. Manchester United played some incredibly silky football with Zirkzee firing the final shot, but his shot was saved by Pope.
It was the hosts who broke the deadlock as Trippier played a pass into Isak, who was standing at the edge of the box, who skilfully flicked it to Tonali, who volleyed it with a first-time shot. But, Manchester United responded well on a counter-attack as Ugarte won back possession to pass it to Dalot, who slotted it to Garnacho, and he fired it into the bottom corner with ease.
Newcastle immediately restored their lead moments after the second half started as a fantastic run and cross from Livramento was received by Jacob Murphy, who selflessly squared it to Harvey Barnes to tap it in.
After some minutes, a slip from Mazraoui proved to be costly as Harvey Barnes charged down the middle with the ball and fired it into the roof of the net to double their lead. To add insult to the injury, an error from Manchester United defensive error led to a loose ball, which Bruno Guimaraes picked up and fired to add a fourth goal to the tally. Manchester United were never in the game and were rightfully on the losing side.
