The Spanish club had achieved unparalleled success in the last two decades, dominating Spain and Europe with their performance. However, since 2018 they have been facing severe financial hardship that has vastly affected the club operations, future planning transfers, wage structure and managing contracts in recent history.

Barcelona Transfers Club Performance

Transfers have made significant impacts on club performances over the years, their big-hit signings helped the club in achieving trophy-laden campaigns, these prominent names such as Luis Suarez, Neymar jr, Ivan Rackitic, Gerard Pique, Samuel Eto, David Villa and Dani Alves also brought domestic and international success while shattering numerous records as club and individually.

Post 2015 treble era, the club has struggled with getting the transfer right with managerial changes and problems in the club’s top brass management led downfall monetary and performance-wise on the pitch.

During this period, the club signed many players on record-breaking transfer fees and paid substantial salaries to the players — who weren’t able to replicate the success as compared to previous transfers.

Phillipe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele, Antonie Griezmann, Martin Braithwaite Miralm Pjanic – were big signings that failed to deliver due to inconsistency, inability to inherit the club’s playing style and subsequently left FC Barcelona on lower fees impacting the club financially.

Barcelona Transfer Challenges and Criticisms

Consecutive failures on the European level and domestically attracted waves of criticism for overspending on transfers which led to financial mismanagement and instability.

Unplanned huge wages and salaries for players also led to violations in Financial Fairplay Regulations and exceeded the net spend causing problems in signing, registering and contracts of players.

Major arrivals of players like Coutinho, Greizmann and Dembele plunged the club into financial crises that they are still suffering after a couple of years.

Salary structure and wage bills skyrocketed due to poor planning forcing them to sell and part ways with key players such as Lionel Mess, Luis Suarez, and Ilkay Gundongan the most recent name.

Recently, they signed players who couldn’t fit into the team’s philosophy and tactics — With a lack of vision and focus on squad strengthening particularly in positions where a void was created because of big departures.

A sense of ignorance towards La Masia, their traditional supplier of players, and the graph of players coming from the academy has gone down in recent years. Mainly due to the club’s primary eye on players from the transfer market having played some role in the downfall and attracting fan condemnation.

Barcelona’s transfer strategy has been a perfect blend of promoting the club’s youth talents, bringing in big star players, and cashing record-breaking fees cooped with long-term vision. Also to be noted, is that this philosophy has recorded a shift in the last five years due to various reasons.

The world’s most prestigious academy La Masia played a key role in acting as the primary supply chain of producing talents to promote Barcelona’s first team operations.

Most of these players eventually became the club’s greatest players and created a rich legacy with their careers. Gavi and Lamine Yamal are the two current La Masia graduates making waves in the world of football.

They are renowned for playing possession-based football tiki-taka rooted deep into the club’s philosophy by the club’s legendary player and manager. Thus, their signings were carefully selected based on the player’s technicality and whether they would be aligned with it.

Moreover, the Catalan side also made smart investments in young players carrying potential the most recent example being Pedri, Frenkie De Jong, Jules Kounde and Ronadl Arajuo — who have been deeply integrated into their team with their skills.
