Battlefield 6 is getting its long-rumored battle royale mode, and it will be arriving quicker than anyone even expected. After months of leaking and rumors and a few quiet hints from EA and Battlefield Studios, the new free-to-play experience has finally been revealed, and it will officially be known as Battlefield: REDSEC.

The mode will launch on October 28, 2025, along with Battlefield 6 Season 1, adding a major new way of playing one of the most popular shooters in the world.

For several weeks, fans have been trying to connect the dots on clues regarding Battlefield's return to the battle royale genre. Dataminers came across references to a "redacted sector" while insiders reported on a mode codenamed "REDSEC."

Today, EA revealed they were correct with a teaser released on EA's official social accounts announcing the Battlefield REDSEC gameplay trailer for YouTube at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET / 3 PM GMT, right before players can start playing the game.

In contrast to Firestorm from Battlefield V, which was locked behind a full game purchase, REDSEC is entirely free. Players can jump into the mode from PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC without buying Battlefield 6. This alone makes REDSEC infinitely more accessible and creates an opportunity for millions of players who may not have the base game.

What to Expect from Battlefield 6 Battle Royale REDSEC

Although EA has not provided full gameplay information yet, Battlefield REDSEC is likely to introduce the iconic large-scale chaos of the franchise into the battle royale genre. In early gameplay from Battlefield Labs playtests, we experienced destructible environments, vehicle dynamics, and swimming, utilizing the same classes as the multiplayer in Battlefield 6. We also don't have any idea about REDSEC's matchmaking system, but we do know what kind of matchmaking system Battlefield 6 has.

Additionally, developers made a number of gameplay changes based on community testing feedback. Time-to-kill on weapons was rebalanced to be more forgiving on precise shots, armor capacity was increased, and performance on the map overall was improved. When the game launches, the initial map is supposedly named Lyndon Beach and will be the battlefield in REDSEC’s season kickoff.

Can REDSEC Succeed Where Firestorm Fell Short

This isn't the first time Battlefield has entered the battle royale space. The Firestorm mode included in Battlefield V at launch in 2019 had potential but was stunted as a mode that was only available for purchase after the game was already released.

REDSEC avoids both of these pitfalls by making the mode free from day one and having just a few weeks elapsed between the launch of the main BF 6 game.

The competition is incredible, with Warzone, Apex Legends, PUBG, and Fortnight currently taking the crown in the genre.

However, Battlefield does bring an ace to the table - scale, vehicles, and destruction - assembling in an innovative and historic way to differentiate REDSEC.

Why Is REDSEC's Timing Perfect for Battlefield 6

Battlefield 6 has become an instant success and the timing of REDSEC could not be more perfect. EA has recently confirmed that Battlefield 6 is breaking franchise sales records, with over 7 million copies sold in the first few days.

On Steam, Battlefield 6 enjoyed an astonishing 747,000 concurrent players, showing all signs of a true revival for the series. Pairing the release of REDSEC with the Season 1 release of new maps, vehicles and weapons is a brilliant way to maintain company and community momentum around that excitement.

Battlefield REDSEC seems to be aiming at an innovative jump for the franchise, being the combination of the open world spectacle of the scale of a Battlefield experience, with the accessibility of modern battle royale design.

If the game delivers on the promise, explores the limits, leverages the strengths of the IP, and delivers on community expectations, REDSC could be the most significant and exciting addition to Battlefield 6 and maybe a serious new entry in the battle royale space.
