Until Dawn Developer’s Next Project Is Closer Than You Think

After many years of waiting, the studio behind Until Dawn has finally announced their next major horror title, Directive 8020. This sci-fi survival horror had been delayed from its scheduled 2025 release, but with this new Directive 8020 release date, it feels even closer than before.

Directive 8020 is being described as the largest project that Supermassive Games has ever taken on as a studio. This game is arriving with a brand-new outer space setting and many new gameplay elements set to be introduced.

Directive 8020 Release Date, Platforms, and Steam Details

Initially scheduled for launch in October 2025, Directive 8020's release got delayed due to several factors, including layoffs and organisational changes at Supermassive Games. That delay broke the studio’s usual Dark Pictures release rhythm, but it also allowed the team to expand the game’s scope. The final Directive 8020 release date is now confirmed for May 12, 2026.

The game launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with Directive 8020 Steam confirmed as a digital-only release. Console players will have both physical and digital options, with pre-orders already live. All pre-orders will feature an upgraded deluxe edition including a variety of cosmetics, collectables, cinema filters, digital soundtracks, and a digital artbook for each, until stock runs out.

Story, Gameplay, and Directive 8020 Cast Details

Directive 8020 takes place in a future where Earth is on the brink of collapse. The storyline of Directive 8020 will focus on the crew of the Cassiopeia, a colony ship for surveying and mapping planets in orbit. After awakening from hypersleep, the crew discovers one of their members has been killed, and there is a hole in the hull of the ship.

They soon find themselves dealing with a creature appearing to be an alien life form, capable of perfectly mimicking human beings. Therefore, trust becomes dangerous, and every choice can cost lives.

Among the confirmed Directive 8020 cast details, actress Lashana Lynch stars as Brianna Young, the ship’s pilot. Like in previous Supermassive games, every character can die or live depending on the player's decisions.

A new Turning Points system allows players to rewind key choices, while a Survivor Mode removes that safety net entirely. Couch co-op for up to five players and online multiplayer coming later.
