Ever since the inception of Pokemon GO, the developers have been consistent with the steps to make the game more engaging and exciting for the trainers. Whether through the refinement of PvP battle mechanics or the introduction of new features such as Dynamax, Pokemon GO's timing and method of implementation ensure a strong community adoption while aligning seamlessly with the game's broader roadmap and future events.

Speaking of which, Dynamax is one of the recent introductions from Pokemon GO. While the Dynamax evolutions have been a feature in the anime series for ages, it was 10th September 2024, when Pokemon GO saw the debut of these evolutions through the GO Big event. From a new form of battles to obtain the Dynamax Pokemon to a bundle of promising rewards upon defeating the featured Pokemon, a lot of new features of this introduction continue to keep the fans buzzing with excitement. In this article, we will provide you with a comprehensive guide to Dynamax Pokemon GO.

What is Dynamax in Pokemon GO?

Dynamax Pokemon GO is a new mechanic that sees these little monsters grow to a massive size. Dynamax made its debut first in Pokemon Sword and Shield. For the game, it took almost five years for the evolution to make its introduction.

While the majority of the Pokemon just grow in size, there are others, like Gengar and others that have a completely different look when they go through Gigantamax evolution. However, all of the Pokemon get little clouds forming around their heads when they are Dynamax evolved. From the best Dynamax Pokemon Go like Beldum to the new edition Abra, every species will have little clouds forming around their heads when they are Dynamax evolved.

Unlike the other massive introductions that the game has had, the Dynamax battle mechanism has been kept straightforward by Pokemon GO. Similar to raid battles, the Dynamax battles come with different tiers. Trainers can solo the featured Pokemon based on its tier, which is seen on the power spots (discussed later in the topic).

Also, when a Pokemon is dynamaxed, the regular moves will be replaced by powerful max moves that are based on the original move's type.

Once you catch a Dynamax Pokemon, you will see a symbol featured with the Pokemon in your bag. The lowest IVs in the Dynamax Pokemon caught from the power spots can be 10/10/10, while the highest IVs can be 15/15/15. Any Pokemon that has a shiny variant in Pokemon GO will have the chance to be shiny as a Dynamax Pokemon from the battles. As far as the shiny rates go, the odds are the same as the normal Pokemon in the wild/eggs/raids. No mega Pokemon can be used for Dynamax battles.

Your dynamax journey begins with research! Yes, you heard that right! If you have yet to catch your first Dynamax Pokemon, you need to complete the ‘To the Max’ research to get your hands on the first Dynamax Pokemon. This step is crucial, as having a Dynamax Pokemon is the only way you can participate in the battles at power spots. The research gives you an encounter with Dynamax Wooloo. With Dynamax Wooloo included in the lineup, you can participate in the Dynamax battles at the power spots and obtain further Dynamax Pokemon.

This is a three-page research that is focused on the tasks of max battles.

Once you have that Pokemon with you, the steps to getting Dynamax Pokemon become easier. Here is everything you need to know.

Max Particles

Max particles, also known as MP, are the equivalent of raid passes in Pokemon GO. Similar to how raid passes are required to battle the raid bosses, when you want to battle Dynamax Pokemon at the power spots, you will need sufficient max particles.

In addition to being the requirement for Dynamax battles, you can also use the max particles to power up max moves of Dynamax Pokemon.

There are two ways you can collect max particles. The first way is to collect them from power spots (marked as X on the map). The second way is to obtain the max particles by walking 2 kilometres.

From power spots, you can collect 120 max particles on the first day and 100 particles from the second day onwards. Moreover, by walking 2 km, you can collect 300 max particles.

Keep in mind:

  • You can collect up to 800 free max particles in a day.
  • You can hold up to 1000 max particles at one point.

Also, until you collect the 300 max particles (which you earned by walking) from the dynamax menu, it will not reset for the next day.

When you purchase max particles, there are no bars on how much you can hold.

Pro Tip: You can collect up to 1,080 MP from Pokemon GO with a trick. Begin by collecting the 300 MP from the 2 km walk. Following that, collect 480 MP from four new power spots (120 each). Since you already collected the 300 MP from walking, it will reset. You can again walk 2 km and gain another 300 MP, making it a total of 1,080. Please follow the steps carefully to achieve it without failure.

Power Spots

Similar to Pokéstop, the power spots are spread out on the map. These are identified with an X icon. This is where you battle and catch Dynamax Pokemon. Unlike gyms, the power spots change every now and then. There is only 1 Dynamax battle at each power stop every day. Once you defeat a Dynamax Pokemon, you can leave a Pokemon in the power spot to take its place.

Requirements for Dynamax Pokemon

Here are the requirements for Dynamax battles:

  • You have to be at least level 13 in Pokemon GO to participate in Dynamax battles.
  • You have to complete To The Max and obtain Dynamax Wooloo or Dynamax Skwovet to enjoy battling for further Dynamax Pokemon.
  • Only Dynamax Pokemon can be used for Dynamax Battles.

How to battle and get Dynamax Pokemon?

First, you will need to walk towards the power spot, which has the Pokemon you wish to battle. Here are the further steps from there:

  • Click on the power spots and you will be directed to the lobby.
  • From there, look at the battle option on your screen that will include the amount of MP (based on three different tiers) it will take.
  • Once clicked, you will see the suggested lineup for the battle comprising only Dynamax Pokemon.
  • There are no timers in Dynamax battles. The only way you lose is if all your and your friends' Pokemon faint after battling.
  • Once you use fast and charged attacks, you will slowly fill up a ‘Max Meter.’ How quickly you fill the meter depends on the amount of damage you do. Once it is filled up, you and your friends will have a dynamaxed evolution of your Pokemon in the middle of the battle. Once dynamaxed, you will be able to use three max moves, which offer heavy damage. But after using these moves, your Pokemon will get back to its original form.
  • Once you defeat the Dynamax boss, you will have a window similar to raid battles that will showcase the rewards and the number of balls you have to capture the Pokemon.

Once the Dynamax Pokemon is caught, you can see it in your bag. It will feature a Dynamax symbol that helps you distinguish it from other caught species. Do not forget to check out our Pokemon GO Guide to learn more.

How to Dynamax in Pokemon GO?

While you can take a look at what your Dynamax Pokemon looks like in the bag after being caught, unlike the regular or mega ones, you cannot have a Dynamax-evolved Pokemon in your bag or as your buddy.

You can only evolve your Pokemon Dynamax during battles in power spots.

Once you use fast and charged attacks during battle, you will slowly fill up a ‘Max Meter.’ How quickly you fill the meter depends on the amount of damage you do. Once it is filled up, you and your friends will have a dynamaxed evolution of your Pokemon in the middle of the battle. Once dynamaxed, you will be able to use three max moves, which offer heavy damage. But after using these moves, your Pokemon will get back to its original form.

There are a total of three max moves with Dynamax Pokemon, and you have the option to choose. The three max moves are max strike, max guard, and max spirit. Here's what you need to know about them:

Max Strike (Attack)

Max Strike is a damage-dealing attack that is also known to lower the featured Pokemon's speed. This is the default move during Dynamax battles.

Max Guard (Defense)

The second-most popular choice is Max Guard. It is basically a temporary defensive shield that protects against the damage from the battle boss. However, you would need to spend max particles and candy to unlock this move on your Dynamax Pokemon.

Max Spirit

Max Spirit heals you and your teammates' Pokemon when it is used during battle. Similar to Max Guard, you would need to use resources to unlock this move on your Dynamax Pokemon.
