How Fans Are Bringing Multiplayer to The Last of Us Part 2

For many people who enjoyed the original game's Factions mode, The Last of Us Part 2 was a disappointment because it didn't include an official multiplayer option upon launch.

Recently, the rise of the modding community has brought attention to the possibility of creating an unofficial multiplayer version of the game. So, will you be able to play The Last of Us Multiplayer?

Will The Last of Us Part 2 Have a Multiplayer Title?

The Last of Us Part 2, one of the best PC games, is a single-player experience. Naughty Dog originally planned to create a standalone multiplayer game focused on expanding the Factions mechanic from the first game.

Naughty Dog later scrapped that plan because they didn't want to hop on the bandwagon of making multiplayer titles. All it wanted to do was focus on new single-player titles, including remakes and upcoming projects like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

The plan might have been dropped that time, but fans never stopped dreaming about The Last of Us 2 multiplayer. Many fans would have liked co-op functionality or competitive modes, especially considering that the gameplay mechanics of The Last of Us Part II are particularly suited to online multiplayer encounters.

Fans have explored ways to recreate these experiences, keeping the hope for online gameplay alive even years after the release. Thanks to the modders' community, this is finally going to be a reality.

The Last of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Mod Explained

A PC mod by Speclizer_ is currently giving players the closest experience to The Last of Us 2 multiplayer. During testing with very rough pre-alpha builds of the mod, testers were able to control two separate characters on the Seattle Day 1 Map. Although this mod was incredibly buggy, it demonstrates that players can exist in the same virtual world of The Last of Us.

The mod focuses on PvP, as including NPCs causes major issues with the game’s code. Currently, the mod only supports PvP mode. Speclizer_ released a compilation video of the actions that occurred during the testing phases of the mod, and it serves as another milestone towards creating a community-developed version of The Last of Us Multiplayer experience.

Eventually, this modded The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer version will give the experience, gameplay and environments from the original Factions mode, along with a competitive atmosphere.

Although there is no release date and completion is not guaranteed, the continued effort and interest from the gaming community illustrate how much of a market demand exists for The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer.

The efforts of the community to keep the spirit of Factions alive will ensure that the legacy of The Last of Us continues beyond the single-player campaign.
