Arun Jaitley Stadium History
Arun Jaitley Stadium was formerly called the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. It was named after the Kotla Fort. The venus is owned and operated by the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) and located on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi. It was established in 1883. The first Test match at this stadium took place on November 10, 1948, when India faced the West Indies.
During a 2017 felicitation event, the DDCA named four stadium stands after former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi, former India all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath, and former India and Delhi opener Gautam Gambhir. The locker rooms for the home team and away team were named after Raman Lamba and Prakash Bhandari, respectively. The stadium was renamed on September 12, 2019, in commemoration of former DDCA President and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
He died on August 24, 2019. The stadium was officially renamed at a ceremony held on September 12, 2019. On the same occasion, one of the stadium's stands was named after former Indian captain Virat Kohli. It received a lot of criticism as never a current player name on the stand was there at any stadium before this. In 1983, Sunil Gavaskar equalled Sir Donald Bradman’s 29th-century record.
In 1999, Anil Kumble got all ten wickets in an innings against Pakistan, becoming only the second bowler to do so after Jim Laker. Sachin Tendulkar recorded his 35th test century against Sri Lanka, breaking Sunil Gavaskar's record for most test centuries. It has been a lucky ground for India. The Men in Blue have created numerous records at this venue.
However, there were controversies in 2009. An ODI match between India and Sri Lanka was called off due to pitch conditions, as it was deemed unsuitable for hosting international matches. Based on the match referee's findings, the International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended the ground for 12 months. The ground was made operational back in 2008.
