Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium History
Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is commonly known as Uppal Stadium. It is a stadium located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It is operated by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). It is also the home ground for the Hyderabad Ranji team and the Hyderabad women’s cricket team. IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) also plays their home games in this ground itself.
It is situated in the eastern suburb of Uppal, has a seating capacity of 55,000, and extends across 15 acres of land. The stadium hosted the final of the 2017 IPL and the final of the 2019 IPL. It was renamed after the former prime minister of India Rajiv Gandhi. Earlier to the stadium’s construction, HCA hosted domestic and international matches at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in the Fateh Maidan sports complex in Basheerbagh, central Hyderabad.
The Sports Ministry of Andhra Pradesh State (now the Sports Authority of Telangana State) owned the ground, therefore HCA had limited jurisdiction and control over it, prompting them to build their stadium. HCA submitted a proposal for a new stadium to the then-Andhra Pradesh government, led by N. Chandrababu Naidu, in 2003. The plan was soon approved, and HCA was provided a budget for it. The government also selected a huge plot of land suitable for the project in Uppal.
HCA however, following the negotiations by Govt, got away with paying an amount of 43,00,00,000, INR which was the contract price only. The ends are called Pavillion End and North End. VVS Laxman retired, and the HCA chose to honour the former batter by naming the North End after him.
