3 min
Akash madhwal join CSK

The Chennai Super Kings have made a massive move ahead of their much-anticipated clash against the five-time champions Mumbai Indians. In a strategic decision, CSK has officially signed fast bowler Akash Madhwal as a replacement for the injured Ayush Mhatre for the remainder of IPL 2026.

Madhwal, who rose to fame with his incredible performances for Mumbai Indians in previous seasons, is now set to wear the yellow jersey. This signing comes at a very critical time for the Super Kings as they are in the bottom half of the IPL Points Table. The team management is looking to strengthen their bowling attack following a series of injury setbacks in their camp.

Akash Madhwal Join CSK Ahead of IPL's El Classico

Akash Madhwal was once a key part of the MI's pace battery, but he will now find himself in the opposition dugout as CSK prepare to face their biggest rivals at the Wankhede Stadium. Madhwal has played 17 IPL matches and taken 23 wickets with an economy of 10.05. His death over bowling skills will give CSK's pace attack a much-needed variety, along with Anshul Kamboj and Mukesh Choudhary.

Akash Madhwal CSK presence will give his team the much-needed experience. Having played at the Wankhede numerous times during his stint with Mumbai, Madhwal understands the conditions, which will be helpful for his team in the MI vs CSK IPL 2026 match. Fans are eager to see if he gets straight into the playing XI for the "El Clasico" under Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy or if CSK prefers to go with the unchanged bowling attack.

Akash Madhwal IPL 2026 entry can be a game-changing moment for his career. The 32-year-old pacer is known for his accurate yorkers and was impressive when he was playing for MI. Over the course of his career, he has represented some of the best teams in IPL, which augurs well for his future. Apart from MI and CSK, he has also represented Rajasthan Royals.

Why Ayush Mhatre is Ruled Out of IPL 2026?

The unfortunate exclusion of Ayush Mhatre is a significant blow to Chennai Super Kings batting lineup. The 18-year-old batting sensation had been providing explosive starts at the top of the order. Mhatre had already scored over 200 runs in just six matches, including a highest score of 73 against Punjab Kings, the best team of the tournament so far. He was also in the race for IPL Orange Cap due to his consistency.

Unfortunately, Mhatre sustained a severe left hamstring injury while batting during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. Despite being in visible pain, he tried to continue his innings but was eventually forced to leave the field.

Later, medical assessments confirmed that the injury is serious and will require a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks. As the recovery time extends beyond the duration of the tournament, he has been officially ruled out of the rest of IPL 2026 season. CSK were expected to add a batter to fill Mhatre's void but instead, they have brought in the fast bowler Akash Madhwal.
