Live Blog: IPL 2025 Suspended Indefinitely Due to India-Pakistan Border Tensions

The tensions between India and Pakistan have reached such an extent that it has started affecting the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. The 59th match of the IPL between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at Dharamsala was stopped midway, with the authorities claiming it to be a floodlight failure.

However, the match was shockingly cancelled later, with the reports claiming that it was down to border tensions between India and Pakistan. The stadium was evacuated by the IPL authorities, and the players went off to the dressing room. It was a huge decision by the IPL authorities to call off an important match midway, but it had to be done due to security reasons.

IPL 2025 Suspended

According to TOI, a meeting of the IPL governing council got underway immediately after the game, and the board officials decided whether the tournament would carry on or not. It was an urgent meeting led by the IPL chairman, Arun Dhumal, who came out with a statement later.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal later stated that the tournament would continue as per the schedule until further orders from the Indian government. Dhumal claimed that the officials are “reviewing the situation” and haven't received any directives from the government.

However, another update came in the next day after the suspension of the PBKS vs DC game. The IPL governing council decided to suspend the league for one week due to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan along the border. The decision was taken keeping the interests of all the stakeholders in mind. Hence, there will be no matches in the IPL for one week starting from May 9.

What's BCCI Take on IPL 2025?

The BCCI had earlier stated that the tournament would go ahead as of now, but given the increased tension across the border, it was decided to suspend the league for one week. The board kept the best interests of stakeholders in mind and clearly does not want to compromise the safety of players and coaching staff. The BCCI arranged a special train for the players and support staff of the PBKS vs DC match to move out of Dharamsala.

Recently, the match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, scheduled to be played on May 11, was shifted from Dharamsala to Ahmedabad. However, the PBKS vs DC match could not be shifted quickly due to logistical reasons. The exact dates will be out in a few days as the BCCI looks forward to the situation.

What If IPL 2025 Get Cancelled and Who Will be Winner?

Will IPL 2025 Be Cancelled? It was the question on everybody's mind after the PBKS vs DC match was cancelled. If the IPL 2025 gets cancelled, there will be no winner of the season for now. In this case, the board might decide to hold the rest of the tournament later when the situation becomes normal. However, there will be no IPL 2025 cancellation as the tournament has just been postponed for now.

There was also a chance for the tournament to be held later. Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to be held during that time of the year. However, the rising tensions between India and Pakistan might not allow the tournament to take place. It remains to be seen how the Asia Cup takes place since the tensions between India and Pakistan are at next level.

A similar situation occurred in 2020 when the IPL had to be postponed midway due to the increased no. of COVID-19 cases in India. The rest of the tournament was held in the UAE later in September. But the BCCI has decided that there will be no IPL 2025 cancellation and it is just postponed for a week. If there was an IPL 2025 cancellation this time, the tournament would have taken place later.

The tensions between India and Pakistan increased after a terrorist attack on Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, recently. In response, the Indian Army launched a brutal attack on certain areas across Pakistan and POJK to destroy a no. of terrorist camps running across the border. As a result, the tensions increased, and both sides are currently on high alert.
