Amidst the tensions, there were calls to release Mustafizur from the Indian Premier League (IPL), who was the only Bangladesh player. He was picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2026 auction. The franchise faced a lot of flak and ultimately the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had to step in.

The BCCI ordered KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman and the franchise did exactly that. This didn’t go well with the concerned in Bangladesh as they called up an emergency meeting. However, they escalated the matter further and their T20 World Cup 2026 participation became the hot topic.

Bangladesh confirmed that they won’t play their T20 World Cup 2026 games in India and requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to change their venue to Sri Lanka. Notably, Pakistan are also playing their games in Sri Lanka.

The reports claimed that ICC potentially will agree to their demand but official confirmation is yet to be made. This will act as a massive development with the T20 World Cup 2026 around the corner.

Bangladesh Blocks IPL Broadcast After Mustafizur Rahman Controversy

Despite all the political situation, Bangladesh have enjoyed big fan following in Indian Premier League. As a result, they must be wondering how to watch IPL in Bangladesh. Amidst all the fuss, the Bangladesh government has taken a massive step now. They released the official statement, which confirmed that they have blocked IPL broadcasts in their country and matches won’t be telecast there.

The Bangladesh Government released an official statement, saying that they have taken the decision keeping in mind the public interest. The statement read:

“In view of the subject, it is being informed that a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has come to light regarding the exclusion of Bangladeshi star player Mr Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders team for the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament, scheduled to be held from 26 March 2026.”

“No rational reason for such a decision by the Indian Cricket Board is known, and such a decision has pained, saddened, and aggrieved the people of Bangladesh. Under these circumstances, until further notice, a request is made as per instructions to stop the broadcast/telecast of all matches and programmes of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This order is issued with the approval of the proper authority and in the public interest.”

The IPL in Bangladesh enjoys a huge fan following and this will act as a massive blow to the BCCI, which earns a huge amount of money from the broadcast. It remains to be seen if IPL telecast in Bangladesh will be there further this season.

Over the years, a no. of Bangladesh's players have enjoyed great success in the IPL. The likes of Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan have played a massive role in the league and it remains to be seen if they get a chance again or not.
