The BCCI’s decision to move the Indian Premier League 2026 playoffs matches away from venues like Wankhede Stadium and M Chinnaswamy Stadium has ignited debate among fans. While Bengaluru was initially expected to host the final because the RCB are the defending champions, the summit clash has now officially been shifted to Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Meanwhile, talking about IPL 2026 playoffs venues, Dharamsala will host Qualifier 1, while New Chandigarh’s Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium will stage the Eliminator and Qualifier 2.

The move has surprised many fans, especially because Wankhede and Chinnaswamy are among the best cricket stadiums in the world. However, the BCCI reportedly considered multiple operational, political, and logistical concerns before finalising the playoff venues. Ahmedabad will now host the IPL final for the fourth time in five years.

1. Bengaluru’s MLA Ticket Controversy

One of the biggest reasons behind Bengaluru losing the IPL final was the controversy surrounding ticket allocations. Reports claimed the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) requested nearly 10,000 complimentary tickets, including allocations for MLAs and VIPs, which reportedly did not go down well with the BCCI. The issue of confusion during planning discussions ultimately pushed the board to reconsider the venue.

2. Safety and Operational Concerns Around Chinnaswamy Stadium

The BCCI was also believed to be concerned about crowd management and operational challenges in Bengaluru. Reports pointed to lingering safety concerns after last year’s stampede incident during RCB celebrations, which raised questions about handling another massive crowd event at the venue. It might be the reason why Chinnaswamy not hosting IPL playoffs.

Even though KSCA publicly stated that the stadium was fully prepared to host the playoffs, the board reportedly preferred a venue with fewer logistical complications. The Narendra Modi Stadium is the biggest cricket stadium in the world, and its experience in handling ICC finals and IPL title clashes also influenced the final decision.

3. Weather and Scheduling Played Against Mumbai and Bengaluru

Weather conditions also reportedly worked against Wankhede and Chinnaswamy. With the IPL playoffs scheduled during a period when rain interruptions become more frequent in Mumbai and Bengaluru, the BCCI looked for venues with comparatively safer weather windows and better backup arrangements. It is likely to be the reason why Wankhede not hosting IPL playoffs along with the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Dharamsala and New Chandigarh emerged as strong alternatives for the first two playoff stages, while Ahmedabad’s infrastructure and larger seating capacity made it the preferred choice for the final.
