Tim David Faces Punishment After Umpire Controversy in MI Clash

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated the five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 12 in their own backyard. RCB batters slammed 240-4 on a flat pitch at the Wankhede Stadium and then restricted the opposition to 222-5.

While RCB won the match, their star overseas player Tim David, one of the best T20 batsmen going around, was fined for “disobeying an umpire's instruction during a match”. The IPL released a statement stating that David was fined for not complying with the rules of the league.

Tim David Fined After Umpire Controversy

During the 18th over, Tim David was seen casually checking the ball and didn't hand it over in time, despite getting several warnings from the umpire. It somewhat irked the umpires as they were checking if the ball needs to be changed or not.

The same incident happened in the 20th over as well, and that led to a breach of Article 2.4 of the IPL's Code of Conduct. As a result, David has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees after admitting to his mistakes after the game, according to the TOI. Tim David umpire dissent fine is not something the player or the franchise would have hoped for it can affect his performances in the upcoming matches.

“The first incident occurred when the umpires changed the ball during the 18th over (17.2) of RCB's batting innings. He wanted to have a look at the ball and did not hand it over despite being repeatedly asked to do so. The second incident occurred during the 20th over (19.2), when he again did not hand over the ball to the umpires, amounting to a repeated failure to comply with the instructions or directives of the umpires,” read the IPL statement.

Tim David fine is a blow for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who have been in excellent form this season. They will hope their star cricketer remains in clean sheets in the upcoming matches.

Tim David Continues Excellent Form

Apart from Tim David umpire controversy, the right-hander had a brilliant day with the bat. He came in to bat at No. 4 after RCB got a terrific start from their top three. The right-hander played an unbeaten knock of 34 in 16 balls during the MI vs RCB IPL 2026 match. He smashed two fours and three sixes against a team that has hit most sixes in IPL and helped his team reach a mammoth total.

Tim David is in excellent form this season and has shown why he is among the most dangerous batsmen in IPL at the moment. He has scored 133 runs this season at a blistering strike rate of 221.66.
