Why Sanju Samson Is Not Keeping Against GT? CSK Reveal New Wicketkeeper

2 min
Sanju Samson

Chennai Super Kings were dealt with a worrying injury scare during the 66th Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad had earlier won the toss and opted to bowl first in a crucial encounter for the franchise’s playoff hopes. However, the five-time champions suffered a huge blow when their star wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson suddenly walked off the field during the second over of the innings.

Why Sanju Samson Is Not Keeping vs GT?

Sanju Samson was forced to leave the field after suffering a hand injury during the second over of the Gujarat Titans’ innings. The incident happened when Spencer Johnson bowled a delivery far down the leg side to Sai Sudharsan. Samson dived to collect the ball, but the late movement appeared to hurt his fingers or wrist during the stop.

Although the CSK physio attended to him on the field, Samson eventually walked back to the dressing room for further treatment. Young wicketkeeper Urvil Patel then took over the gloves for Chennai Super Kings. The youngster was quickly called into action as CSK new wicketkeeper to replace Samson.

Sanju Samson injury could be a worry for CSK as he is one of their prime batters and is in good form as well.

Will Sanju Samson Bat Against GT?

Samson is arguably one of the best batsmen in IPL. Despite not keeping wickets during the GT vs CSK match, Samson came out to bat alongside Matthew Short. The star opener didn't return to the field after sustaining the injury as Urvil Patel continued to keep the wickets.

Samson’s presence remains extremely important for CSK, especially in a must-win clash for their playoff hopes. The wicketkeeper-batter has been one of Chennai’s standout performers in IPL 2026, scoring close to 500 runs this season at an average above 45 and a strike rate nearing 170. He has also smashed two centuries and was constantly a contender for IPL Orange Cap this season.

However, the golden duck against Gujarat Titans didn't go in his favor and it might have ended his season as well. CSK need other results to go their way in order to qualify for the playoffs.
