Will IPL 2026 Be Impacted Due to Reported Energy Lockdown?

The start of the most-anticipated T20 leagues in the world, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, is scheduled on March 28. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will lock horns against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Bengaluru. While the cricket fans are waiting for the IPL, the management is facing a bigger crisis since the political conditions around the West are not great. So, the question arises here: Will the IPL 2026 be postponed? The management has not given a clear answer yet.

Will IPL 2026 Be Postponed?

Currently, there's no official clarification on the matter, but clearly, there is a mounting uncertainty. The fans are awaiting the IPL 2026 schedule phase 2 release but the management has delayed it due to the election dates. However, another reason might be the ongoing fuel crisis that is going on around the world and the reports of Energy Lockdown to be imposed. If we look at the previous seasons, the schedules were released before the start of the biggest cricket in the world.

Meanwhile, the situation in Pakistan regarding PSL being played behind closed doors due to circumstances outside of their control has only added to this concern, so cricket boards are showing signs of planning by implementing precautionary measures in these highly unpredictable environments. If the concerns grow, the board will have to look at other options to conduct the IPL, just like the PSL or delay it for a certain period of time.

Moreover, the board cannot change the venue from India to Dubai due to the constant geopolitical tensions and logistical challenges. The political tensions between Western countries make it impossible to conduct any tournament in the UAE. All these factors point towards one possibility: while the IPL is unlikely to be cancelled, delays or structural changes to the schedule cannot be ruled out if the situation worsens.

What If IPL 2026 Delay Happens?

The upcoming international cycle remains quite busy for all the teams, and conducting the tournament after June will not be possible. All the countries have already scheduled their further tours, and hence, the boards will not allow the players to participate in the IPL 2026. It will be a huge loss for the franchises and the richest cricket league in the world, in general.

If we look at the 2021 IPL, the tournament was held in two different phases due to COVID-19. The first phase was held in April-May, and the second was pushed to September-October. Hence, the board might look to do something like this, provided the other board members give permission to allow their players to participate in the tournament.
