Chennai Super Kings have officially appointed Zaheer Khan as their head coach for IPL 2027, with the former India fast bowler replacing Stephen Fleming. The former New Zealand captain had been in charge of CSK since 2009 before the franchise ended its 18-year association with him in July 2026.

Zaheer Khan first match as CSK head coach will therefore come in the team's opening game of IPL 2027. However, the opponent, venue and exact schedule for that fixture have not yet been announced. His appointment comes after CSK missed the playoffs for a third consecutive season in 2026.

Zaheer brings considerable IPL experience to the role, having played in the league from 2008 to 2017 and later worked in coaching and mentoring roles. He has worked with some of the best teams in IPL like Mumbai Indians and played a key role in their dream run till 2020.

Zaheer Khan’s Coaching Journey Before CSK

Zaheer Khan’s move to Chennai Super Kings comes after several years of experience in franchise cricket beyond his playing career. After retiring from the IPL in 2017, the former India pacer joined Mumbai Indians, initially taking charge as Director of Cricket before becoming the franchise’s Global Head of Cricket Development in 2022. He was involved in player development during MI’s successful period and worked closely with emerging cricketers.

Zaheer then joined Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor in 2024, working alongside the coaching staff and contributing to team strategy and player development.
