Can Kobbie Mainoo break into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024?

While this season has not been very positive for Manchester United in terms of results, the development of players like Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Willy Kambwala has provided encouragement to fans for the future.

Mainoo has by far been the biggest revelation this year, having come through the Red Devils’ youth ranks. Without further ado, let’s discuss whether he can make it into the England squad for Euro 2024.

Kobbie Mainoo: Does he have Three Lions pedigree?

Mainoo has impressed with his performances for Manchester United this season. He has made 24 appearances for the senior team across competitions, scoring three goals in the process. One of the goals was a winner in a 4-3 victory over Wolves in the Premier League.

As a result, Gareth Southgate decided Kobbie Mainoo would not travel with the U21s and instead be a part of the main national side in the recently concluded international break. He played for 15 minutes in England’s 1-0 loss to Brazil and played for 74 minutes in their 2-2 draw against Belgium.

The 18-year-old boy from Stockport has shown immense maturity in his actions on the pitch. His decision-making, ability to pick a pass and his dedication to the game make him one of United’s most-prized assets for the long run.

While Manchester United have failed to perform well this season, it has allowed Mainoo considerable game time. The third midfield spot in the England XI alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice will be vacant come the summer and Mainoo has made a strong case for being considered. However, Southgate’s affinity towards picking Jordan Henderson is no secret and it remains to be seen who prevails.
