Club Brugge vs Dortmund Preview

  • Tournament: UEFA Champions League
  • Date: Thursday, September 19
  • Kick-off Time: 19:00 GMT
  • Venue: Jan Breydel Stadium, Belgium

The UEFA Champions League is all set to return with a new format and new excitement for the fans. Last season runners-up Borussia Dortmund will travel to Belgium to play their opening game this season against Club Brugge. The Belgium club missed out on qualifications last season and now eagerly anticipate the competition’s new format.

Dortmund had one of the best seasons last time, winning against Newcastle United, AC Milan, Paris Saint Germain but fell against the mighty Real Madrid, who won their 15th Champions League. Nobody expected them to come out of the so-called group of death and then beat Atletico Madrid and PSV Eindhoven in the knockouts.

Their Bundesliga campaign was not that good as they finished 27 points behind Champions Bayern Leverkusen to record the club’s worst domestic performance since 2015. Their great performance in the European competition boosted Germany’s UEFA coefficient which enabled them to qualify despite finishing fifth. Focus will be on their new 36-year old manager Nuri Sahin, who will expected to perform after Edin Terzic took the side to the finals.

The german club will face familiar opponents as its their third meeting in last seven seasons. They also boast a favourable record of not of winning the last four games in Belgium without even conceding a single goal.

On the other hand the Belgian Pro League champions will have a difficult campaign as they have opponents like AC Milan and Man City in the upcoming fixtures. The estimated points sufficient for a place in the playoffs is eight points and that would be something they will target.

Last season Brugge were in the UEFA Conference league and were defeated by Fiorentina in the semi-finals. They were unbeaten at home in Europe last season, which helped them in their campaign.

Kyriani Sabbe will be back for this game but Bjorn Meijer and Casper Nielsen will continue to be on the sidelines. Danish winger Andreas Skov Olsen, the top scorer for the Belgian side with three goals will be available for the match and a lot will be expected of him.
