Everton Transfer Analysis and Overview – 2024

Everton Football Club is one of the oldest and proudest teams in English football and was one of the founding members of both the Football League and Premier League. With twenty-four major trophies in their trophy collection including nine English League titles and five FA Cups, the club has been carrying the sigil of a rich footballing history of England.

The Toffees finished in the 15th spot in the 2023/24 English Premier League which forced their hands to offload some of the notable players from their squad in order to vacate space for potential newcomers. However, despite making significant signings in the summer transfer window of the 2024/25 season, their fate has not seen much outward road with a journey of high and low. But, it has not changed the structure of their plan in the transfer market which has been full of some strange buys and sales. With a long insightful history, Everton Football Club, which is also called “The Toffees or The People’s Club”, has been one of the most successful clubs in the transfer market, in both players, sales, and buys.

Everton Transfers Club Performance History

Everton Football Club have had a graceful journey in the transfer market since the first day of Football League. In the inaugural season of the English Premier League in 1992, the Toffees had a net expenditure of £5.4 million which saw them lure in seven players including the great forward Paul Rideout who came from Rangers. Since then, more than 2000 players have been traded by the Merseyside outfit in the transfer market.

Players like Romelu Lukaku, Mikel Arteta, Peter Reid, and Tim Cahill have been brought into Goodison Park which have influenced the course of history for Everton, demonstrating the club’s successful vision to find great talents in the transfer market. Despite being bound by their financial limitations, the Liverpool-based club have signed high-profile players Jake O’Brien and Iliman Ndiaye in the 2024 summer transfer window. Despite many players failing to impress after coming to the club, it is fair to say that Everton holds an aura of great performance in its transfer strategy so far.

Everton Transfer Strategy and Philosophy

Everton’s transfer strategy has always boasted the club’s ambitions in buying world-class talents from different leagues. However, the recent financial constraints have seen a shift in the club’s approach to the 2024 summer transfer window.

The Premier League club’s priorities have always been finding not-so-popular players in the market and bringing those young talents to the youth academy. Everton’s 20024/25 summer transfer deals have hinted at a possible strategic foresight of the club management that will shape the trajectory of their 2025 January transfer window. The club has always seeked to bolster its youth academy, which has always been a crucial supply line of talents. Now, with Everton shifting their focus to asset management, they are expected to avoid the pitfalls of past lavish spending that led to economic woes.

Everton Transfer 2024 Challenges & Criticisms

The one and only challenge Everton face in 2024 is the club’s financial crunch, owing to their new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock. The estimated cost to build the new facility which is under construction and is expected to be ready by 2025, is around £786 million. As a result, the decision-making process in transfers has been centralised, with the director of football Kevin Delwell at the helm of the process.

Toffees were on a spending spree in recent years, resulting in some devastating failures which have drawn wide-ranging criticism from the fans of the club. The decision making in the 2023-24 transfer market was done by a wider group of people, but this time things have changed as Everton are expected to be in the transfer business influenced by the ideas and inputs of manager Sean Dyche and the head of the recruitment team, Dan Prudy.

Most Expensive Everton Transfers

Everton FC have always been a lavish spender in the transfer market. Most of the club’s big spending have been executed in the last decade after Farhad Moshiri took over the majority stake in 2016. Despite him splashing the cash, the results have remained ineffective. The Premier League club have slowed down their approach of going after players with big price tags recently after performing poorly in the transfer market. But, they still remain one of the major English clubs who have made some expensive transfers over the years. On that note, let’s take a look at the most expensive Everton transfers of all-time.

The in-form left-winger Iliman Ndiaye has also been signed for £14.2 million to bolster the attack that has been wasteful in the last season.

Financial worries have brought a restraining order in Everton’s transfer strategy of late. The Merseyside club have been forced to sell some of the promising players who were pivotal in their journey in the Premier League for the last couple of years. The transfer of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa in 2024 was reportedly a part of the plan to bring in cash to tackle the financial instability at the club. The Toffees earned £47.5 million in their former midfielder’s sale. Along with Onana, seven more players have been offloaded in the 2024/25 summer transfer window.

Top Signings for Everton in 2024-25

Everton Football Club have opted for a cautious approach in the 2024/25 transfer market as they are running at a loss and are in need of a substantial amount of money to back their stadium construction project. But, amidst this tough time, the Liverpool-based outfit has made some calculated signings in the 2024 summer transfer window to reinforce some areas. Among all arrivals, the most notable one is their new defender Jack O’Brien, who arrived from Lyon on a £15.2 million contract. He has not played many games for the Toffees, but he has shown glimpses of his high potential.

Worst Signings for Everton in 2024-25

Everton brought in new players in the summer transfer window in 2024, and it has been five months since then. It is too early to predict the worst signings for Everton this season. However, Tim Iroegbunam is yet to find his rhythm under Sean Dyche. The English midfielder has made six Premier League appearances this season with no performance to justify potential so far.

Everton Transfer Spend Till Now

Everton is one of the biggest spenders in the English Premier League as the club broke the bank last decade for a string of signings in the transfer market. Sitting at an estimated value of £810 million as of 2024, the Merseyside club is now facing financial issues on all fronts. Under Farhad Moshiri, they have had an expenditure worth £680 million in transfers. In players’ sales, the Toffees have earned around £530 million since 2016.

BREAKING: Everton have fired manager Sean Dyche; David Moyes may replace him

Everton have sacked manager Sean Dyche just three hours before their FA Cup third-round clash with Peterborough United. The club is now searching for his replacement, with former West Ham United coach David Moyes emerging as a leading candidate.

OFFICIAL: Orel Mangala completes loan move to Everton

Premier League giants Everton have completed the transfer of Lyon midfielder Orel Mangala on a season-long loan after completing his medical on Friday evening. The 26-year-old primarily plays as a central midfielder but can also deputise in the holding position.

The Belgium international joined the French club from Nottingham Forest earlier this summer and remains contracted with Lyon until the summer of 2028.

“I feel really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started,” Mangala told Everton club media.

“Everton is a big club. When I’ve played against Everton in the past, I’ve always felt there is a big fanbase here with a lot of passion for their club so it was an easy decision for me to come here.“

Breaking: Everton forward ‘on his way’ to Ligue 1’s Marseille

According to ‘Fabrizio Romano‘ on ‘X’ (formerly ‘Twitter’), Premier League club Everton’s forward Neal Maupay is set to join the Ligue 1 side Marseille FC.

Maupay will be moving to Marseille in a loan deal that contains an obligation to buy. The French club will reportedly pay the Toffees an initial loan amount of €500k for the striker’s services throughout the 2024-25 season. After that, the obligation to buy clause will kick in which as per Romano is staged at €5.5 million.

However, the deal will include potential add-ons circling around €3 million as well. Further to conclude the financial agreement of the transfer, Everton will hold a 20 percent sell-on clause in any future transfer deal for Neal Maupay by Marseille.

‘Fabrizio Romano’ has laid out that, the French player is ‘on his way’ to complete his medical at the Ligue 1 club.

Everton close in on a transfer for Lyon midfielder

As per ‘Fabrizio Romano‘, Premier League club Everton is closing in on a transfer deal for Ligue 1 side Lyon’s defensive midfielder Oriel Mangala. Romano has laid out that the Belgian player is likely to join the Toffees in a loan deal which could include a ‘buy option clause’.

Sean Dyche’s Everton obviously sold Amadou Onana earlier in the window to Aston Villa. Since then reports have touted that the club’s hierarchy has been on the lookout for someone with similar caliber in the midfield.

Oriel Mangala could give the Toffees’ midfield a bite which they have been lacking since the start of the new Premier League season. Whether Everton can get this one over the line before the window shuts, remains to be seen.

BREAKING: Kieran Trippier has decided to leave Newcastle United with Everton interested

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier reportedly wants to leave the Magpies before the end of this summer transfer window. The England international who was an unused substitute in the season-opener against Southampton has one year remaining on his contract.

The veteran defender won the captain’s armband for most of his time with the Magpies, but Bruno Guimaraes has been elected as the new club captain this season. At the age of 33, Trippier wishes to explore other opportunities where he would be guaranteed first-team football.

He would be open to leaving St.James’ Park if the right opportunity comes along in the final few days of the summer window. Everton are reportedly amongst the suitors for the England veteran.

Everton leading the race for Barcelona’s Vitor Roque

The young Brazilian forward arrived at Barcelona at the start of 2024 and struggled to force his way into the first-team, making just two of his 14 La Liga appearances under former manager Xavi.

The 19-year-old striker is currently deemed surplus to Hansi Flick’s requirements and Barcelona are ready to part ways only seven months after his arrival. According to reports, with multiple clubs interested in the player, it is Everton who are best-placed to sign the young forward before the deadline day.

With less than two weeks left of the summer transfer window, Roque’s future is entering a gray area in terms of a move away, as there is currently no breakthrough in terms of negotiations.

Barcelona have rejected Everton’s bid for Vitor Roque

Premier League giants Everton were reportedly exploring a move for Barcelona youngster Vitor Roque, who has been deemed surplus to Hansi Flick’s requirements in the upcoming season. The Brazilian is regarded as one of the most prolific young attackers in the world.

The Toffees have made an offer of €25m plus €3m in add-ons, which was swiftly rejected by Barcelona. The Catalan giants are currently demanding an offer between €30m and €35m.

It is currently unclear whether Everton will reevaluate their offer and meet Barcelona’s valuation of the highly-rated striker.

Everton ready to make a second offer for Barcelona’s Vitor Roque

Barcelona’s Brazilian prodigy, Vitor Roque has fallen out of favour at the Camp Nou and is all set to make an exit in the remaining days of the summer transfer window. Everton has emerged as a surprising suitor for the forward with the club advancing in negotiations with Barcelona.

The teenager joined the Catalan side in January and has unfortunately not been able to convince the club with his displays. Hansi Flick has followed the decision of his predecessor, Xavi Hernandez to overlook Roque in his squad. Everton has already seen a €28 million bid rejected and is preparing to meet the Blaugrana’s demand of €30 million.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto’s future is up in the air at Everton leading to the Toffees’ interest in Vitor Roque.

Everton amongst the clubs linked with a potential move for former Liverpool star

As per a recent report by ‘CaughtOffside’, Premier League club Everton is among the clubs interested in signing former Liverpool star player Joel Matip in the ongoing summer transfer window. The defender is currently without a club since departing the Reds at the end of the previous Premier League season.

The Toffees are however likely to face competition from league rivals Fulham and Budesliga’s Bayer Leverkusen for the signature of the 32-year-old player. With the situation at Everton regarding their defensive options still quite vulnerable at this stage leading into a new season, links with Matip do make sense.

Reports in the English media have laid out that Michael Keane and Mason Holgate might leave the Merseyside club this window making that area of the pitch fall short of options for Sean Dyche and Everton’s hierarchy. Also, the future of Jarrad Branwaite at the Toffees is uncertain as of now with him being linked with a few big clubs in recent times.

Matip obviously has tons of Premier League experience as the Cameroon international has 150 appearances for Liverpool in England’s top flight. He can add that calmness and stability to Sean Dyche’s backline. ‘CaughtOffside‘ has listed that Matip’s agent has already been one-to-one with the hierarchy of all three interested clubs (Everton, Fulham, and Leverkusen).

The clubs reportedly have also been provided with all the know-how of the defenders’ current situation. Everton’s interest in Matip might raise certain eyebrows due to his connection with their fierce rivals Liverpool.

Everton’s new ownership talks have fallen apart leaving the club in disarray

An official statement from Everton has revealed that new ownership talks for the Merseyside club have ended.

The statement read, “Following a period of exclusivity, discussions between Blue Heaven Holdings and The Friedkin Group over a potential sale of a majority stake in Everton have ended and The Friedkin Group will not be progressing with a purchase of the Club.

“Both Blue Heaven Holdings and The Friedkin Group entered discussions in good faith to explore whether a sale could be agreed. Those discussions have concluded. The parties agree it is in both their interests for Everton to explore alternative options.

“The Friedkin Group will remain a lender to the Club and is proud to have played a key role in enabling the new stadium to be built, which will help ensure a bright future for both Everton and the City of Liverpool.

“Blue Heaven Holdings maintains a positive relationship with The Friedkin Group and would like to thank them for the time and effort they have put into this process.

“When there is further news to share, it will be provided via the Club’s official communication channels.”
