Fernando Muslera retires from international football but will continue to play at club level

The Uruguayan international goalkeeper Fernando Muslera has decided to hang up his boots on the international stage for his country. He announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, April 25, 2024, making him an instant subject of discussion in the footballing world.

The veteran goalkeeper has played in a total of four FIFA World Cups for Uruguay and was a crucial part of the team when they won the Copa America title in the year 2011. He has a tally of 133 matches for the country at the highest level and is considered one of the top goalkeepers to ever play for La Celeste on the international stage.

However, despite his retirement from international football, he will continue to play at the club level. He currently represents the Turkish club Besiktas J.K. in the Super Lig. He joined the club in August 2011, and his current contract with the club expires in June 2024. He is also one of the longest-serving goalkeepers for Besiktas at the top tier of Turkish football.

In the 2023-2024 season of the Super Lig, Fernando Muslera has notched up an impressive tally of 16 clean sheets in his 32 outings for the club. Before representing the Uruguayan senior side on the international stage, he also played for the country’s under-20 and under-17 teams at the youth level.
