“I will keep playing” – Lionel Messi reveals good news for fans while discussing on retirement plans

Lionel Messi wants to continue as long as he feels good

Inter Miami ace Lionel Messi has revealed that he wants to continue as long as he feels good playing. The World Cup-winning Argentine turns 37 in June and currently is in the twilight of his career.

Last year, he left PSG, and European football altogether, to join MLS for a new chapter in the United States. The former Barcelona skipper penned a two-and-a-half-year deal in what was largely touted as the final move of his club career.

After guiding Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, there were rumors that Messi could finally hang up his boots from the international stage, having now completed his trophy cabinet, but he’s continued playing for the Albiceleste. The forward is also going to participate in the upcoming 2024 Copa America, where his side is the defending champions.

All this has raised curiosity over how long Messi intends to play. But in a recent interview, he was questioned about his retirement plans, which he brushed swiftly, hinting at furthering his career for a few more years. He said:

“I know that as soon as I believe that I can no longer perform, or no longer enjoy the game, or not able to help my team-mates, then I will stop. For my retirement, it will not matter what age I am. If I feel good, I will keep playing.”

This surely comes as good news for his supporters around the world, as they can continue watching the legend for some more time before he finally drives into the sunset.

Lionel Messi has begun 2024 campaign on a strong note

Lionel Messi has begun the 2024 campaign on a strong note, netting five times from five games and bagging two more assists. This includes three strikes in the MLS from as many games before succumbing to muscular problems that has ruled him out of Inter Miami’s last two league matches. The Herons, armed with some former Barcelona stars, are heavy favorites to win the top-flight title this year, as long as Messi keeps firing, it will hold them in good stead.
