Lionel Messi names Real Madrid and Manchester City as the best clubs in world football

Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi recently gave an interview where he shared his opinion on which club he thinks is the best in the world. Having played for Barcelona, who were by far the best during the Argentine’s time there, he now believes two new clubs have taken over since then.

In an interview with Infobae, Lionel Messi was asked about several notable happenings around the world.

When asked about who he thinks is the best team in world football currently, Messi said,

“The best team, if we have to say, is Real Madrid, because they are the reigning Champions League winners.”

He then explained his reasoning for picking Los Blancos without hesitation, while also mentioning last year’s Champions League winners. He added,

“If you talk about results, it’s Madrid; If you talk about style of play, personally, I like Guardiola’s City. I think any team with Guardiola will be special because of his character, his way of coaching, and how he makes teams play.

“In terms of style of play, for me, City is the best. For results, Madrid.”

Having played under Pep Guardiola for several seasons at Barcelona, it is evident that Messi possesses a soft spot for his former coach. Both clubs have lived up to their title as Manchester City won the Premier League for the fourth season in a row, while Real Madrid won La Liga and the Champions League in the recently-concluded season.

Messi’s season with Inter Miami so far

Inter Miami have made a solid start to the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) season and currently occupies the top spot in the Eastern Conference with 35 points from their 18 games.

They started the season really well and even went on a five-game winning run in April and May, propelling them clear of the competition. However, they have drawn one and lost one of their last two games, allowing FC Cincinnati in 2nd place to close the gap down to just two points, along with two games-in-hand.

A big reason for Miami’s strong run in April and May was Lionel Messi’s form in those two months. He went on a five-game scoring streak, netting seven times in that span, and also assisted four games in a row, providing five assists in a stunning 6-2 win against the New York Red Bulls.

Overall, the Argentine has 14 goals and 11 assists in just 15 appearances for Inter Miami, as he continues to be the heartbeat of the teams he plays for.
