Liverpool backups shine as they thrash Manchester United

Summary

Liverpool's backup players impressed in a 3-0 pre-season win over Manchester United, with Fabio Carvalho, Curtis Jones, and Kostas Tsimikas scoring. Despite not being regular starters, their performances gave manager Arne Slot optimism. Liverpool showed early tactical cohesion under Slot, contrasting with United's struggles under Erik ten Hag. The Reds' strong pre-season form continued with wins over Real Betis, Arsenal, and United. Slot praised the result but noted defensive vulnerabilities, admitting the scoreline could have been tighter. The victory eases concerns about Liverpool's transition from Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool were very impressive as they overcame Manchester United with ease in a 3-0 pre season win. More than anything it was the performance of the back up players that will give Arne Slot the most joy ahead of the start of the regular season.

None of Fabio Carvalho, Curtis Jones or Kostas Tsimikas are expected to be starters when the season kicks off but they were keen to be on Slot’s good books, scoring the goals in this win.

Perhaps the best news for Liverpool’s fans is that the team already seem to have a structure and a sense of what the new manager wants from them. This is the very thing that United are said to be lacking even after two years under Erik Ten Hag.

Liverpool were widely expected to struggle after the departure of Jurgen Klopp earlier this summer. However signs in pre season have been largely positive with wins over Real Betis, Arsenal and now United.

“We are very happy with the result, we scored some really nice goals. But I don’t think we had enough control over the game because United were threatening us more than a few times. It’s a 3-0 win but the score could have been different tonight as well,” the manager said after the game.
