“There are 3 options”: Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels comments on his future

Hummels’ contract is set to expire this summer

Borussia Dortmund star Matts Hummels has revealed that he is still undecided on his future after the Champions League final on Saturday. The German runs out of contract with Der BVB this summer and hasn’t signed an extension yet.

Edin Terzic’s side play the European showpiece at Wembley against Real Madrid with a second title in sight. Club legend Marco Reus has already announced his departure and will be looking to bow out by lifting the big ol’ ears.

He could be followed through the exit door by Hummels, whose terms with the club end next month and he will be a free agent. He was questioned on his future in a recent interview with German publication, the BILD, to which he hinted at a possible stay, while ruling out a move to the MLS.

Hummels said:

“There are 3 options: BVB, retirement or another club. Retirement is currently the least likely option.”

On moving to the US, he said:

“USA are out of the question for me. If I move, I would stay in Europe for sure”.

The defender returned to Dortmund in 2019 after three years at Bayern Munich. Before that, he was at the club for seven years, joining in 2008, ironically from Munich. Overall, he has amassed 507 appearances for the club, winning five titles.

Borussia Dortmund looking to create history at Wembley

On Saturday, Borussia Dortmund play their biggest match yet, as they take on serial winners Real Madrid in the Champions League final. This is their first appearance at this stage of the competition since 2013, when Der BVB lost to local rivals Bayern Munich. Interestingly, that final was at Wembley, where the upcoming final is also held. Dortmund will be hoping to erase the memories of that loss and win their first Champions League title since 1997.
