Raheem Sterling breaks unique UCL record in Arsenal’s game against Atalanta

Raheem Sterling, who is on loan from Chelsea, featured for Arsenal in their Champions League opener against Atalanta while reaching a unique feat in the process.

The English winger came on in as a substitute in the 73rd minute, replacing Bukayo Saka, as Mikel Arteta’s side played out a goalless draw against the Italian giants at the Gewiss Stadium.

By doing so, Sterling broke an unprecedented record of becoming the first-ever player to represent four different English clubs – Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal – in the history of UCL.

The 29-year-old made his first-ever appearance in UCL with Liverpool in 2014 before joining Man City the following year. He was part of the City squad that reached the UCL finals in 2021 before losing to winners Chelsea, the club he would join the next year.

Sterling’s exit from Stamford Bridge in the summer came amid a strained relationship with manager Enzo Maresca, who revealed that the winger was not part of his plans.

The Gunners took the opportunity and signed him on loan for the 2024/25 season. He made his debut in last weekend’s win against Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby.

Sterling’s form has taken a nose dive in recent years, failing to keep up with the consistency he had shown during his prime at Man City. His Spell at Chelsea was a testament to it, however, he would be looking to revive his career at the Emirates Stadium.

Provided his quality and experience in the Premier League, Sterling’s addition could prove to be valuable in Aresnal’s quest to compete on all fronts. The Gunners boss Mikel Arteta also knows the English forward very well from his time at Man City and also what he can bring to the table.

Following the draw against Atalanta, Arsenal will turn their focus towards the weekend’s clash against leaders Man City, whom they trail by two points. The Gunners will be looking to seize the top spot, but they are aware that they need to be at the top of their game to end Cityzens’ four-match winning streak.
