Switzerland 2-0 Italy Player Ratings

Switzerland 2-0 Italy Player Ratings as reigning champions knocked out of Euro 2024

Switzerland have sent Italy packing from Euro 2024! The Swiss side have sealed a 2-0 win to make it through to the quarterfinals.

Remo Freuler stunned the Italy fans in the stadium and sent the Swiss faithful into a joyful mood with a goal close to half-time. The midfielder made a late run into the box, latched on to Ruben Vargas’ ball, and slotted it past Donnarruma by getting it through the legs of Mancini.

Italy came into the second half all set to get back into the match, but their confidence was broken just seconds later. Vargas went from provider to scorer with a curler past Donnarruma in the first minute after the restart.

Post came to the rescue for Yann Sommer twice – one off the header of his own teammate and then off a Gianluca Scamacca shot.

Switzerland held on with a solid defense and managed to seal a 2-0 win.

Goalkeeper

Yann Sommer – 7: Had to make just one save in the same and was hardly troubled by the Italian forwards. Managed his defence well and didn’t have to do much apart from that!

Defenders

Manuel Akanji

Fabian Schär – 8: Rock solid at the back and did not give the Italian forwards any chance to get close to the goal. He was never leaving them any space to get their shots away.

Manuel Akanji – 8: The center-back was a shadow of Scamacca today and never left the Italian forward. He managed to follow him everywhere and never gave him a moment’s peace.

Ricardo Rodríguez – 8: Hardly put a foot wrong today and was ready to move into the left-back role when needed. He was helping out Aebischer and Xhaka by giving them an option to pass all the time.

Midfielders

Dan Ndoye – 7.5: The hero from the group stages could not get a goal today, but was giving the Italian side a tough time throughout the game. He managed to get four shots away, but none were on target.

Remo Freuler – 8.5: A well taken goal, but that was just the icing on the cake based on his whole performance. He was everywhere on the pitch and helped them control the game from start to end.

Granit Xhaka – 7.5: Stuck to his position and ensured that Italy had no chance to create from the middle. He did take one shot from outside the box, but it was easily blocked.

Michel Aebischer – 8: Chiesa would be having nightmares about the Swiss star. Giovanni Di Lorenzo will also be hoping to never face Aebischer any time soon.

Fabian Rieder – 8: He will be unhappy about not getting a goal or an assist today, but still managed to give the Italian defense a tough time.

Ruben Vargas – 9: A goal and an assist in the key game. What more can you ask from a forward?

Breel Embolo – 6.5: Came close to scoring in the first half and should have had his name on the scoresheet. However, his attempt was saved by Donnarumma, and he only managed one more shot in the whole game.

Gianluigi Donnarumma – 7: Made an excellent save in the first half to keep his side in the game, but could not do anything about the two goals. One was through the legs of his defender, while the other was an inch-perfect shot and well past him despite his best efforts.

Defenders

Alessandro Bastoni
Alessandro Bastoni (Getty Images)

Giovanni Di Lorenzo – 6: Tried his best to get ahead and cross into the box, but Rodriguez and Aebischer were giving him a tough time. He was forced to cut back and pass and could not deliver a single ball to the strikers.

Gianluca Mancini – 6: Tried his best to get close to Freuler to block his shot, but just could not get there quick enough. There was nothing he could do for the second goal.

Alessandro Bastoni – 6.5: Tried his best to keep the Swiss forwards in check, but could not do anything about the two goals scored.

Matteo Darmian 6.5: There was nothing wrong with his game overall, but his game alone was not enough to get them over the line.

Midfielders

Nicolò Barella

Bryan Cristante – 7: One of the better Italian players on the pitch today. Kept them on the front foot all the time but his only show was blocked with ease.

Nicolò Fagioli – 7.5: The main main for Italy today and the one who kept trying to get them into the box. He took a shot himself but failed to keep it on target.

Nicolò Barella – 6: Nothing was working for the midfielder today and he was isolated. Was hooked off just after the hour mark as he had just 33 touches in 64 minutes.

Forwards

Gianluca Scamacca

Federico Chiesa – 7.5: Italy’s best player today, but still failed to get a single shot on target. His final shot in the game was closer to the corner flag than the post.

Gianluca Scamacca – 6: Came close to scoring today, but that was about it. He just could not link with his teammates and that affected their game.

Stephan El Shaarawy – 6: Was hooked off at half-time as he was ineffective in the game. Managed 17 touches and 8 passes in the game.
