Uruguayan players involved in heated brawl after loss to Colombia

Darwin Nunez was seen fighting with the fans…

Uruguay’s players were involved in a heated brawl in the stands with Colombia supporters after their 1-0 loss to Los Cafeteros in the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa America on Wednesday. Darwin Nunez was among those who climbed into the crowd and was seen throwing punches at a Colombia supporter.

Los Celeste’s dream of lifting the title for the first time since 2011 were dashed, thanks to a 39th-minute strike from Jefferson Lerma, who headed home a corner kick from James Rodriguez. After the game, Colombian players were seen celebrating with their fans, while most of Uruguay’s had left.

Violence erupted between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans in the stands, although the reason for that is still unknown. Some players and staff members can be seen coming to blows with fans in yellow shirts, with Nunez among the more prominent figures spotted in the brawl. Police had to intervene and separate the crowd.

Colombia in their first Copa America final since 2001

For the first time since winning the Copa America in 2001, Colombia have reached the finals of the competition again. More importantly, Los Cafeteros have managed to do so unbeaten. They won twice in the group stages before the draw to Brazil, and have since brushed aside Panama and Uruguay. Argentina, the defending champions and reigning World Cup winners, will be the toughest test of their mettle though.
